No not crazy -- once you get used to the slightly bigger bulk (than a K-frame), they have a beauty all their own.

I have a 686 plus in 2 1/2 inch and a 66 in same barrel. I sometimes carry either one and honestly find hardly any difference in either.
I got a good deal on the 686 by offering cash dollars to the dealer and then put some nice S&W boot grips on it I bought from a buddy. I'm pretty happy with it even if speed loaders were a little hard to find for it. That 7th shot in a revolver always messes with my head while shooting it but one extra could be handy some day.

What is the difference in weight between a 2.5" 686 and a 2.5" 66 - if any? I'm thinking maybe the K would be a few ounces lighter.

I have a M66-1 2 1/2 inch barrel and really like it but one thing is always in the back of my mind. All K-frame .357s have to be considered as to what full house load is fired in them due to the proven incidence of barrel throats cracking. In my case I shoot 158 grain lead semi-wadcutters at magnum velocities and make sure the forcing cone is always clean.
I recently bought a Colt Lawman MKIII with a 2 inch barrel. A sweet gun but it was NIB, never fired, with all the accessories. I mulled it over a while and decided if I was interested in this type of a revolver why not a L-Frame with a 2 1/2 inch barrel? I would have adjustable sights, a full forcing cone and frame that can handle any .357 magnum load, and it will carry as well as a K-Frame.
After handling one in a gunshop the search began and I sold the collectible Colt to buy a M686-3 with a 2 1/2 inch barrel. I haven't shot it yet but I intend its load to be the Speer 135 grain Gold Dot at full potential.
I am looking forward to shooting this one soon!

This is my dash 5 plus. I have only had it a few months (first revolver) and I love it. I do enjoy the little bit of extra weight.
I know, I know...frame mounted firing pin! EEEEEEK!
This will be riding in a Lobo Model 1 when it arrives (about 2 more weeks) and I will be feeding it Remington Ultimate Home Defense (Golden Saber) or PDX-1 (Ranger/Talon). My dad just happened to have two 7-shot speed loaders and a HKS cheapo belt pouch for them. I have acquired those.....

You dont see them too often, especially compared to the K frame snubs. From the side, they kind of look like a big 2 barrel deringer with the full lug on the barrel.

M3Stuart: The 686s have a slightly bigger frame and cylinder -- so if you have both a 66 and 686, you have to color-code your speed loaders. The K-frame magnums (except for the very last models with 2-piece barrels) had a flat spot at the bottom of the forcing cone -- which with 38 specials was no particular issue, but with full load magnums (especially with the hot 125 grain bullets) it presented a weak spot and some cracked forcing cones (rare but enough to call for a new design). The 686 has no flat spot and a slightly beefed up the cylinder and frame (hard to tell unless a 66 and 686 are side by side). Oh, and the underlug goes all the way out to the end of the barrel with the 686s.

Below are pics of my no-dash 686, converted to a 7 shooter. I LOVE the revolver, and find it VERY accurate. I do not own a Model 66, so I can't compare, BUT does anyone know the difference in weight between the snubby M66 and the snubby M686+ ? ? ?

As long as we're talking about L-frame 2-1/2"ers, the 242 is a great carry gun, and makes a perfect lightweight alternative to my 19, 66, and 686 snubs.
