I have a 625-2 marked Model of 1988, I was wondering if anyone has production numbers, I cant find any anywhere,
not even in the standard catalog. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
I find the Standard Catalog to be woefully lacking in info like this, info on Mountain Guns, and other "out of the ordinary" variations of standard models...
The first edition of the SCS&W showed 1500 marked 1988 and 1500 marked 1989. Authors couldn't reconcile/verify so they left numbers out in the 2nd and 3rd edition. Not sure if a letter to Roy Jinks would have numbers in it or not.
I have read a number of discussions on this and the answer seems to be that not even S&W actually has records of production for the Model of 1988. This comes from Mr. Jinks. You have to remember that this was the start of S&W' infamous "gun of the week" phase and they would produce small batches of specific models with options and features that had never been available from the factory before. It got kind of crazy for a couple of years. Whatever the number produced was they are a GREAT S&W model to own and shoot. I have one I bought from another gunsmith in 1990. It is the most accurate S&W I have ever fired. It doesn't care what kind of load you load into it. It likes everything. In a Ransom Rest it will place 6 bullets through one hole at 17 yards. We used to shoot bowling pins from 50 and 100 yards with it no problem. It is one S&W I will never part with. I have fired a number of Model of 1989 guns and they don't even come close the accuracy of the 1988 Models. There's something about the barrels they used on the 1988 guns. I have no idea what they did but I wish they would go back to doing it.
