Factory nickel plated stainless guns?
I have a gentleman who has a 629 that he says he bought new that is nickel plated. Seems far fetched, but before I drive an hour to look, I thought I would ask here first. I have never heard of such a thing (or nickel plating stainless to begin with). I think the guy is just mistaken and it is just stainless finish, or maybe he polished it.

Probably high polished. I have heard of people hardchroming a stainless gun, but that wouldn't be factory, obviously.

If he bought it new but doesn't really know what it is, maybe it's NOT his. Buyer beware.

Or the salesman that sold it to him gave him a line of garbage.

I been told on the nickel plated guns they must be copper plated before it can be nickeled.
I was sold a h&r 22 revolver that was tarnished a yellow color. He said it was nickel. After some simi chrome polish and elbow grease it turned out to be a excellent chrome plating from the factory.

Electroless nickel plating, which is what S&W used, does not require a base of copper when plating carbon steel. S&W has stated that they never applied copper plating to their pistols before nickel plating. Nickel plating always has a slight yellow tint, but the yellow tint can become stronger and the surface can become frosted when the finish is neglected. I would imagine that harsh cleaning materials would also cause this sort of damage to nickel plating.

This is internet myth!!!!!!!!!!!
Good firearms plating is "hard plating", plated directly on the base metal, with NO copper "under-strike".
