Default S&W model 442-2

Hello, My name is Marvin L. and I'm new to this forum. Last Saturday I bought a new smith and wesson model 442-2. I was looking at the number and was wondering what the 2 meant after the 442. I am going to carry the gun when I want to carry something lighter than my Ruger SR9 compact. If anyone know's what the number 2 means, please let me know. Thanks.

Marvin,

I believe the -2 stands for the 442 with an internal lock. Not too long ago S&W started producing the 442 again w/o the internal lock still marked 442-2 I think. I carry a 642-2 that has the internal lock. Maybe someone could give you a definite answer since this is only my assumption. I hope the info helps.

The "dash" (in this case a "dash two) simply denotes an engineering change. I'm not sure it refers to the lock in the case of the 442 as, as explained above, there are 442-2s with and without locks.

My book says 442-2 (2001): internal key lock system with new MIM internals.

Welcome to the forum. My 442 is a favorite of mine especially for pocket carry. It will never let you down as long as you train with it and do your part. The gun is more accurate than any one of us can shoot it.

I have a 642, riding in my right front pocket as I write this, and I love it. You bought a great gun and if you do your part training with it it will not let you down. Welcome, Frank.

Marvin,
Welcome to the forum!! You have just purchased a very fine gun which will serve you well. It will take some regular practice but will be well worth it. An unwritten rule here is that you must purchase a S&W atleast every 3 months and report on it.Some have broken that rule and purchased several on the same day!! Seriously, it is a great forum, enjoy!!
