Recently I purchased a Model 64-8 from a local pawnshop with the idea of replacing my 'authorized' on-duty Model 10-6 that I recently qualified with. I replaced the factory black rubber grips with some 1970's factory walnut grips as you can see in photo. After my purchase, I noticed some minor modification differences between the Model 10-6 and this 64-8, other than the stainless steel. I've already been at the range several times with this 64, using the original factory black rubber grips. I'm not ready yet to tackle the service pistol match yet with this new acquirement, but we are working up to it. Putting the two mentioned S&W's up beside each other I noticed the below listed feature differences;
1-Using walnut factory grips on both S&W's, there is a 2-ounce weight difference between both. The Model 10-6 weighs 33.5-ounces to 35.5 for the 64-8.
2-The overall length of both shows the 10-6 with a 9.25 inch length with an 8.88 inch length for the 64-8.
3-Firing pin on hammer of older gun mounted on the hammer with a frame mounted feature on the newer.
4-Leaf spring on older with coil spring on newer.
5-Four inch HB of older is one solid whereas the newer has something else that looks like a sleeve/insert.
6-Square butt for my 10-6 and round butt for newer.
I'm sure there may be other engineering issues I'm missing and I hope my friends here would chime in with their opinions of these two cop .38's, of which one is still serving. I would appreciate any input/analysis of the two S&W's listed here. I have a smoother trigger-pull on the older due to much use. I don't believe the coil spring on the newer has the potential of the older but would suffice fine, as is.
