Default Success at the gun show! Started with a Smith and came home with a Ruger..and a Smith

I just returned from the local gun show and have been trying to sell/trade a model 57 (no dash) 4" because I am not set up for 41 Mag. I will say that those things are hard to sell! Anyway, while waiting in line for a hot dog, the gentleman behind me asked if I had any luck selling my 57. I said that I had not found a buyer for the gun yet, and he recommended talking to a silversmith that had a table set up at the front and that he was a "41 mag guy". He was interested in my revolver, but more interested in a trade. I looked over what he had and there was a nice Ruger Red Label 12 gauge with the original box and chokes that I ended up getting, and $250 out of his wallet. I figured I had done pretty well, but it was about to get better. I overheard another gentleman saying he wanted to sell a 686 6". I asked what he needed out of it and we settled for $500. It is a 686 (no dash) with the original target stocks, Hogues, the M modification, and an action/trigger job that is sweet! To sum it up, it was worth the $8 admission and a $4 hot dog!

You did good! Congratulations.

I went to the Dallas gun show and came home with nothing.

You may have done well, but the thought of parting with any of my (4) 57's seems like a bad dream. I can't imagine having trouble selling/trading a 41 Mag, maybe its geographical 'cause they're quite popular down here. 686 looks nice, enjoy

Very good day. I like those Red Labels as well as the 686.
A great gunshow indeed.

Thanks! That was the net result. I had been on the hunt for a sporting shotgun to shoot clays with, and ever since I sold a 686 power port, I have been looking for another 686. I thought some of my N frames had slick actions, but this one is glassy....

Cool

You obviously didn't try to sell that 4in 57 here. I'm thinking it would have lasted about 3 seconds.

I actually did list it in the classifieds here and had a few offers, like my 57 and a couple hundred for a 586/686. I purchased a 29-2 from a fellow forum member with great results, just have not had any luck selling. 41 Mag, you either love it, or don't want anything to do with it...

That's true here in Pennsylvania, too. I used to be a big .41 fan and supporter. I told many a 44 lover that my gun's bullets were only .019" smaller than his as my gun actually was 41-caliber while his is a 43-caliber and that's only if we round up. Additionally, a 210-grain .410" bullet leaves the muzzle slightly faster than a 240-grain .429" bullet and shoots flatter, if longer-range shooting is an issue.

But I eventually caved in to popular opinion and now own three 629s. And I had a hard time selling my 6" Model 57.

So nice to hear that someone made out at a gun show.
Usually it is just stories of frustration and high prices.

I survived a barrage of low ball offers and saw the typical "show" prices, but I am headed back to see if I can work a deal on a nice Winchester 92 in 44 mag...
