Product: Model 460XVR

Anybody have one of these and if so what do you think of it? I'd particularly like to know if anyone is using cast bullets in one and if so what cast bullet?

My take is if im gonna lug around a 14" BBl. I might as well use a rifle. My 500 has a 6 1/2 inch bbl and its as long and heavy as I care to haul around. But variety is nice i guess

I bet that thing gets incredible velocities.

That's the same line I get from a few handgunners when I take my 10.5'' X-Frame outta the case at the range. Till I shoot against them, and then I tell them "from the looks of your shooting, I see why you NEED a rifle." Most others just want a chance to shoot it.


I'm not sure what exactly the point of your post is. Maybe just trying to up your post count? I'm surprised you or the other Joker didn't use the old "trying to make up for inadequate male anatomy" line that other trollers use. Ken asked a legitimate question about a legitimate product, if you don't have the knowledge to answer, you should move along instead of showing off your lack of intellect.

Well.......I'm one that really doesn't believe in the concept of "overkill" but with that gun, not only won't you see anything in your scope because of the recoil, if you hit the sucker, there won't be anything to see anyway! Don

I've got two performance center 500's, a 6.5 and a 10.5 inch. I've looked at the 460 numerous times but so far I've not bought. I like odd revolvers and long barrels so if I ever do buy this would be the one I'd get. But I would like to hear from someone who actually owns one and shoots it a lot.

I checked into it awhile back. I think it's been over a year. I called Smith and Wesson and they had not started production and said they were waiting to see how many orders they get or something to that effect. To the best of my knowledge they still haven't produced any. Kind of makes me think they don't plan to at this point.

I have the 10.5 in PC 460, and it is nearly a crew served piece I mounted a bipod and scope on mine as it is too long and heavy to shoot offhand and aside from some scrap Kevlar, everything else I've used as a rest either got shredded and/or started on fire. It is extremely accurate. I'm thinking the 14 in would be very similar, if not a little less practical.

If memory serves this was originally a Lew Horton special. I'm pretty sure that they had some. How many I don't know. So what they might have been telling you about was a second run.

I have the 460XVR in the 8 1/2", and its just as easy and fun to shoot as my 6 1/2" 500 or my JR 5" 500 and not get tired doing so. I couldn't imagion holding up the 14" 460 using factory sights at 100yds or more.
I don't use a scope on my 460 or either of my 500's.

I have one of the Performance Center 14" units. Commissioned by Lew Horton, fluted barrel by German custom barrel maker Lothar-Walther.

I bought it for deer hunting in "shotgun-only" areas where larger caliber, higher velocity handguns are allowed. I wanted to try the challenge of handgun hunting for larger game. Turned out it was more effective than my shotgun due to its much longer reach and much better accuracy. The "humane" round (large mass, very high velocity) helps to drop them dead, too.

Before I bought it, I went to a nearby gun range where I could rent the same caliber revolver, to make sure I could handle the recoil. They had the 8 3/4 (non-PC) version and since I wasn't flinching after 20 rounds, I decided it was a match made in heaven.

The 14" barrel makes it difficult to shoot offhand because of all that weight forward. I usually shoot it with a rest, or with the sling (that came with it) around the back of my neck and under my right arm to provide additional support. When shooting from a rest, it is extremely accurate even at 100 yards.

I use a Burris handgun scope with Burris Signature rings. After the first few rounds, the reticle started rotating due to the recoil so I sent the scope back to Burris to avail of the "lifetime warranty." They fixed it and I haven't had problems since. It doesn't even have the Burris Posi-Lock on it.

I do not reload. I have reloading equipment for other calibers but unfortunately, I no longer have time to reload. I only use Hornady 200 gr. which is usually the least expensive .460 round for this revolver. S&W states that the 460 XVR can also use .45 Long Colt and .454 Casull, but other than possession of a box of .45 Long Colt courtesy of my brother-in-law, I haven't had a need to deviate from my stash of 200 grain Hornadys. Perhaps when I go for bigger game, I might try those 300 grain loads.
