Default 642 Grip/Paint Question

Hi all,

I just recently purchased a 642 in stainless. While I love the gun, one thing I am not crazy about is the stainless portion of the frame that shows through where the grip doesn't cover. I like to pocket carry the gun, but depending on the pocket, there are times where I can look down and see the silver just barely peeking out of the top of the pocket. I would prefer this portion of the gun be black.

Does anyone have any experience painting part/all of the 642 stainless version, and if so, what type of paint did you use? I was also considering using a black permanent marker, but wasn't sure if it would take.

Are there any black grips out there that will cover the backstrap and butt that do not add significant length? The only thing I have seen come close was the crimson trace over mold version, which while covering the backstrap does not appear to cover the butt. Again, I am not looking for anything that adds significant length.
In retrospect, i should have gotten the 442, but that is not an option at this point.

Thanks!

The Crimson Trace 405 does indeed cover the backstrap but does not extend below the grip frame. It is VERY thin - if you put a caliper across the widest part of the standard "boot" grip that comes on the 442/642 today, the Crimson Trace is narrower even when you measure across the laser bulge. But I find the gun extremely uncomfortable to shoot with this grip, even with the light "cowboy" loads that I use to keep damage to my joints to a minimum (158g lead bullet at ~650 fps.) Full power defensive loads are downright painful (to me - YMMV, of course.)

Here is a 642 with a black Cerakote applied. Pretty cool.

What's wrong with the silver part of the gun being silver?

There is a three-finger Uncle Mike's J-frame grip that covers the backstrap. You can modify the grip, removing the lower portion, to turn it into a boot grip flush with the bottom of the grip frame. Someone here on the forum has done this and written about it along with providing photos if you do a search.

If anyone is close enough to look down in your pocket they are simply too close.

Take the grips off, install a strip of black plastic electricians tape on the back strap, and reinstall the grips.

Maybe...

I have this on my 642, covers the entire butt and is much better for my fairly large hands, and the additional length of one finger is not an issue with me at all. Is this what you are looking for?

Product: J Synthetic Full Size Grip with S&W Logo

The grips on my 642CT cover the entire backstrap and butt. It is a bit snappy with full house loads but my reloads of cast 148grWC and 5 grains of Unique are fun to shoot.

There are at least two CT grips for the 642. Mine is the #305:

Click on the picture for a bigger image. I use front pocket carry for my 642 with these grips without issue. They are MUCH more comfortable to shoot than the issue grips - no comparison.
