681 NYSP pics...
Finally got her, she was a bit dirty, but 2 hrs later....I think she cleaned up pretty well. Yes, I didn't put the grip screw in, may change the grips out to pachymeyer to preserve the wood.
Thanks to those who recommended this fine "all you need and nothing you don't" wheelie.

They, 681's, were made 1980-1992. Approx 53,180 made. The NYSP guns were shipped to John Jovino Co, NYC in June 1982.

I think only the earlest 681s and 686s have the S&W logo on the right side, which I think makes for a better looking gun. I'd guess the seriall number starts with AAA or AAB? Either way, congrats on a fine gun. I have an early police marked 681 and its a fine shooter.

M 681
Nice revolver. I was always a fixed sight fan. Interesting that they were shipped in 1992. Well into the wondernine era. How large is the NYSP? What did they transition to after that? What do they carry now?

AAB I think.
I'm assuming this will handle the 125 gr .357's just fine??

Shoot the 125's to your heart and hands content as that round was the reason for the L frame Smith coming into existence.
Nice find! I lucked into a very early AAA serial prefix 581 a while back and would like to add a 681 if the chance came around.

The 681's is my favorite 4 inch fix sited gun! Built like a tank. Shoot it all day long. What's not to like. Enjoy it.

Yep, me too Bob.
I have a 686 with lighter, almost oak light, grips and side by side....the dark grips on stainless is preferred....JMHO.

They were, also that goes for 586/581.
I dont know why they moved the logo to the left side, that big empty void on the cover plate is less than ideal.
I was bidding on a nickel 581 on gunbroker a while back that is like that, only to find out the guy selling it has like an $800 reserve on it. Guy has listed it at least 10 times.

Got my first 681(no dash) a couple of months ago, it came w/ the Hogue grips that were nice but then a relative found a set of wood grips that they had in a storage box. I'm a sucker for the wood grips, it just gives it that classic look. It was a hell of a deal as well, I found the 681 from a family that was liquidating their collection and picked it up for $250.00

I'd gone out that day and bought lotto tickets!!!
You could probably sell it for double what you paid to the right person.

My S/N goes AAE####, I thought it was AAB###.
So, fairly early, but not like AAA or AAB.

If that is 1 of 500, than this is 2 of 500:
I bought this NYSP 681 5-6 years ago at a show in Indy. Mine has the smaller S&W stamp on the left side...
