Congrats, I love mine. Sweet guns. Although the grips are beautiful, mine tore my hands up. They were just to small for me to get a good grip on. I put some ahrends on it and haven't looked back

Gorgeous revolver. I am very envious (and not ashamed to say it, apparently). Congrats on the new acquisition.
How are you going to carry that lil fella?

Cool I have the 5" model and its one of the very best handguns I own. The Trigger sucked when I got it from the Per-For-Munce Ctr. But off came the sideplate and in went some polishing, and a couple new springs. Now it has a great trigger and sets off all primers in DA. The lock thingie flew out of the gun and landed in the trash where it belongs as well. Then I replaced the brass front sight with a red light pipe one.
My 13 year old son can hit a tennis ball at 25 yards with it as can I.
Enjoy.

I ended up ordering this set of Nill grips for this beast. I would normally would have ordered a rounded butt configuration for a "snubbie" but the size of this frame and 8 shot cylinder made me think that this would make for a better hand-filling grip. The factory grips, while beautiful, are too short and do not fill my hand. Nills makes this round butt grip that mimics a square butt.

I didn't like the OEM Eagle boots, either. I opted for the PC Shop walnut N-frame RB grips - SKU 414170000 ~$50 + s/h from S&W Accessories.
Likely my favorite cf revolver!

Brain, that's a beautiful revolver that you will absolutely love. I ended up with two of these because I chanced upon a used one while I was waiting for the factory to build the one that eventually got to me five months after I ordered it. I don't plan to sell either one.
I have found the gun to be amazingly accurate despite its short barrel. I agree that the boot grips don't offer a heck of a lot to hang on to, but I like their look more than I like the appearance of longer stocks. I kept working with the small stocks until I found a way to grab them that doesn't do too much damage to my hands.
If you want a low-stress, high-satisfaction experience, get some 148 gr .38 Special wadcutter competition rounds and blast away. The recoil is negligible and the performance is spectacular.

I can suggest the Simply Rugged sour dough pancake holster for OWB carry. I have a number of these and they are fantastic. Here is a link to their website:

Nice photos, too. I also went with the Ahrends combat, no finger grooves. Nice stocks, wish the front strap wasn't flat and edgy.
I can fix that, though.
Also, the Eagle "finger grooves" fit perfectly, if your fingers are the size of Labrador turds.

That gun looks sublime.
I wonder how it would work out as a CCW gun.
I've CC'ed an L frame 4 inch with no problems before.

I want one of these and have debated how it will work. I'm not worried about weight or printing but I think comfort while driving may be an issue as it is thicker being a N frame. Could come down to holster though.
Those pics aint helping me say no.

Great looking machine!
I'm thinking of adding one to the collection soon.
I had asked this somewhere prior, but how does it seem to operate without the moonclips? Can you load and eject the spend brass smoothly and properly? I have never owned a revolver with the space for a moonclip, so I just don't know how one would operate without using such.

I have one of the originals and found the grips shoot amazingly well for being so short, but I do had short fingers. But they were not really to my liking, so Keith Brown is making some grips patterned after some K frame Herrett grips I had. Looking forward to seeing how they work.
Those are really great guns and much fun to shoot. I put mine in a shoulder holster when I want to carry it. I guess I need to take DC's advice and shoot some .38s in it.

The moonclip-ready 627s have their cylinder dished out on the entry side leaving an outer ring of the original overall length so that standard .357M/.38 Spcl cartridge rims will catch and headspace appropriately. Simply stated, they work with singly loaded cartridges as well as moonclipped cartridges. The 5starfirearms.com milled Al speedloader & loading baseplate work well with the UDR, too. Here is mine with some Ahrends non fg retro targets in cocobolo:
Also shown above is my second UDR with a rounded non-fg Ahrends grip and my 627 Pro sporting some JM grips. Below is my 642, 2" 10, and UDR gripped as they both are now, for relative size comparison.

I agree with about everyone else about the stock grips. You don't want to use them for kindling, but you will probably take them off and never use them again. Use a good belt and a good holster and you got a heck of a good setup. I have a Simply Rugger holster for a 627 Pro and will probably be ordering another one for my 2 5/8. Have Fun!

Just got one and took it to the range for the first time this morning. Amazing little pistol - good trigger, accurate, good looking and at least so far I like the stock grip. Dennis

Stainz: Where did you get that grip? I love it but I don't see it on the S&W site. Thanks, Dennis

What's so bad about the original grips? Open and even with the gripframe on the back and bottom, which is how they should be on a revolver with a barrel that short. Everything else is way off balance. Short barrels don't provide much leverage against the body and large grips cause the gun to flop too much in a scabbard type holster. The Miculek grip looks and feels terrible on my 2" and 3" N Frames but is perfect starting at 4". I will be happy to accept donations of small, thin N Frame grips that nobody wants.

Dave, some of us won't be carrying the UDR so tightly - or, possibly, may use it as a house defender. Plus - it took three tries to get an Eagle boot that mated properly! I have two UDRs - one properly fitting OEM grip.
DennisE, call S&W Accessories - order SKU #414170000 'Performance Center N-frame walnut' ~$50 + s/t + s/h. It isn't on the site, but is usually available - sometimes on 'backordere' - but, fear not, they'll have them soon. Good luck.

Thanks for that info. The reason I ask about single-loading the 627, is that I had just read (elsewhere, but forget where) a thread with a guy who said he prefers using the moonclips because he was getting too many light primer strikes without. But, I don't know if that is credible, nor do I know if there were mitigating circumstances, like poor quality ammo/hand-loads, modified hammer spring, etc.
Just curious what the experience has been with people who do not regularly use the clips.

Must be be bad ammo.
Zero problems from moon clips in my 627.
My moon clips each have seen 300 rounds.
I only have 3 moonclips by the way.

If you were replying to my post above, there may be a little confusion. I was referring to a post I read about a guy having FTF issues when NOT using the moonclips. His 627 worked fine WITH the clips. That's what I was curious about.

[QUOTE=BrainOnSigs;136577548]Installed the set of Nill grips that I ordered. The ergos now feel perfect. I know many of you prefer round butt grips on a snubbie. While the factory grips were great looking they didn't fill my palm and support my pinkie. These Nills, while designed to work/look better on a 4"-6" revo, really balance out this 8 shot N frame while feeling awesome in my hand.
Man, those Nill grips are just fantastic. It's amazing, and a little bit sad, just how much better those Germans are at making grips for our American wheel guns. Not trying to slight the American makers, but it's just hard to argue with the fit and finish of those Nills. Granted, you most certainly do pay the price.

Those Nill grips really look good, could you tell me what model number they are and where you got them? I checked but didn't find that exact model and I think they would make my 657PC look just right.

The Nill model# for my grips is SW016HO8. Jim at MacTech is extremely helpful. MacTec : Karl Nill Grips Sales
I usually hit the Nill Grips web page to verify the model then ask Jim to verify.
Product search: Karl Nill GmbH
