Default DOB On A 686-6 & A 67-5

Hello all, my very first post. I've been lurking for a while and find the forum very interesting and informative.

A quick intro, my name is Dave and I live in Sydney Australia. About a year ago I got bitten by the handgun bug and in particular the S&W "Wheel Gun" bug. Our laws, especially for handguns are strict and the process is very long winded and drawn out, but happy to say I'm now the proud owner of a 686-6 and a 67-5.

I bought the 686 off a club member so have been using it regularly for a while untill my permits came through and I could take her home but today I finally bought my second Smith which is a 67-5 brand new from the Aussie importer.

This brings me to the DOB question as it's a 67-5 has it been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a while or could it be old stock from the US as the importer did not have them back in Feb.

Anyhow if someone would be able to help out with the manufacturing dates it would be much appreciated.

67-5 Serial CSB1905
686-6 Serial CNF9740

Many thanks,

Dave.

Dave, while I can't give specific manufacture dates, I can dial things in a little for you.

According to the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson," the change(s) that denote
a M67-5 took place in 2002 with those for the M67-6 taking place in 2004. My
guess is that your serial no. dates to the latter part of that 2 yr. time-frame.

The switch over from the M686-5 to the M686-6 code change took place
in 2001, with the M686-7 following close behind in 2002.

I hope this helps........
