I'm eating crow
About a month ago I posted that I shot 35 rounds of .357 in my 340sc along with 15 rounds of .38/.38+P. I had no difficulty with .357 FMJ Magtec 125gr (1420FPS) doing Mozambique drills and although harsh accuracy did not suffer. The eating of crow came when I stated "with no ill effects". Well about 1-2 weeks later stiffness and pain in the upper forearm/top of elbow area surfaced. I will still carry .357 medium velocity loads in the gun as they are very manageable but from this point on I think I've learned my lesson. Limit my training session (which are at least bi-monthly with this gun) to 10 rounds of .357 hot loads. I know 1420fps isn't up there with the Federal .357B and the 158gr loads but in an 11.9oz pocket rocket as Dirty Harry once said "a man's got to know his limitations." I have a 442 and carry 135gr Gold Dot +P in it but I bought a .357 and still believe although in mid velocity form, that it still beats a +P in a snub. That's my story and at least I'm man enough to admit the facts and the truth of the matter.

Even the 642 Airweight I used to have was unpleasant with .38 +P. I can't imagine shooting much .357 out of a 12 ounce gun. I did it once with a gun I guy let me shoot at the range. And one shot was enough. Don't remember what it had in it, but he said it was his carry load. And I remember him flinching and wincing with it, too. he said 'In a shooting, I won't even feel it". Maybe, but he sure felt it while practicing.

If this Magtech load is making 1420 fps out of a 2" revolver barrel, that is a pretty stout load - even if it was out of a 4" vented test barrel or revolver it is pretty hot. No wonder your arm hurt!

I hear you, the same happens to me when I get ambitious with my 329, the first box isn't so bad but that second one can hurt

Small light short barrelled revolvers can and are a pain to shoot. I had a snub nose 44 special once and it actually bruised my hand when I fired 50 rounds throught it.

Crow eating
The feet and the beak are the real hard part.
Shoot and pray daily.

Yeah, he felt it while practicing and trained in some very bad habits such as closing his eyes and yanking the trigger. When the SHTF he will do exactly what he did when he trained. He'll close his eyes and yank the trigger. He probably won't feel it, or even be aware (in extreme circumstances) that he is shooting at someone, but he'll still be closing his eyes and yanking the trigger.

I've been carrying and shooting the Speer SB .357 from my MP 360. It is managable and not too unpleasant in the recoil department.
But I don't consider it a magnum load. Just a magnum case.

Baek and feet
I've eaten enough crow to know that as hard as it is to eat, it's worse to pass.

Seriously doubt the factory velocities were with a 2" barrel and may even be taken in a non vented test barrel. Speer Short Barrel ammo doesn't have advertised velocities anywhere near. Don

Just went to Magtech's website. It says 125gr JHP, 1405 fps out of a 4" vented test barrel. Lots of velocity loss going from a 4" to a 2". Don

The box says 1420fps but I think we all agree not from a 2" barrel. I was just saying it wasn't a light load. Fortunately I found that playing catch with my daughter who played 3rd base varsity softball in high school help stretch and cure the injury. I must say though, catching her blistering throws hurt almost as much as that 340sc

Been carrying and shooting J-frames since the late 60s. LWs for maybe 20 years. I've always used std pressure in my (original) Charters and 442s, other than a few cylinders of +P, 'cause that was what they were rated for and what I felt comfortable with. Bought my first new J-frame in forever about six months ago, an M&P 340. Works for me with .38 +P SB Gold Dots, although I'd still have no issue carrying it with std pressure Nyclads
With no intention of ever carrying the load, I shot a cylinder full of .357 135 gr Gold Dot through it just because I could. I wanted to stop after the first three rounds but that didn't seem very manly so I fired all five. I'm not exactly recoil adverse, but that hurt. I have no idea why anyone would want to carry .357s in a working gun this light. For me. anyway, that essentially turns a J-frame revolver into a single shot combat weapon 'cause there's no way I'd ever get any reasonable follow up shot placement out of it. Mas may be able to handle it but I/most of us ain't him.

300 gr. Nosler HPs at 1150 fps aren't real fun out of my 4" 629 either. CB

A friend was going to buy a small .357 to carry in his pocket until he shot a 2 1/2 in. M19. He fired one shot and decided .38 Spec. is enough for a lite weight pocket gun. Larry
