25-5 joins the family
Rescued a well used 4" 25-5 in 45 LC yesterday. Looks like it has been stored in a damp holster, the blueing is discolored and there are a few freckles here and there. The good news is that mechanicly it seems perfect, the best trigger in both SA and DA I have ever felt in a S&W. Lock up and timing appear to be spot on.
I know this has been covered before but I can't find the thread; what is the best way to remove the rust freckles from the finish?
Also want to ask if anyone has a pet load for this critter?
Thanks.

A pet load?
Try 8.0grs of Unique and a 255gr SWC.
The "classic" 45LC load.

Thanks, JB. I'll put that load in my book of things to try.

I use well oiled #0000 steel wool to remove rust, (many disagree with this but I've had no trouble). However freckels are pretty much there to stay after you remove the active rust. My four inch 25-5 is one of my favorite .45 Colt's. My standard load is 8.0gr of Unique with standard primer under a 255gr LSWC. However I've been playing with Power Pistol and have had good results with 8.0gr and8.5gr, standard primer under a 255gr LSWC. Enjoy that new 25-5!

Use fine bronze wool from a marine supply company, instead of steel wool.

Congrats on your 25-5,got mine back in Feb. I do not reload so most of my shooting is commercial loads. Much nicer than Dirty Harry with a full mag load not nearly the recoil. I just won a 27-2 on Gun Broker, it will be in the house getting aquainted I hope Monday with 25-5 and 29-2. Got the Trio now !

My 4" 25-5 shoots quite accurately with a midrange target re-load of:
200 grain plated SWC bullet (Berry's or Rainiers)
Federal 150 primer
Star-Line brass
6.0 grains Bullseye
OAL 1.603"
+1 on the suggestion of bronze wool and Kroil.

As a starter, I use some Mothers Mag polish, and my fingers. That way I don't get too aggressive with the pressure. I agree that bronze wool and Kroil works well. I've done both.
If you start with the Kroil and bronze wool, make Mothers your second to the last step. Once finished, put a coat of Johnson's Paste Wax, or Renaissance Wax on it. Those will help repel moisture, and provide a barrier to the thinned blueing.
