Default Advice wanted: 24-3 3" Lew Horton $799. Update, bought one today.

99%, faint turn line only, the rest is pristine. What do you guys think, is that a good deal?

"The rest" does that include box docs original holster or just gun?

I sold mine for about that a year ago (gun only) and they seem to still sell about that price today but they dont go up for sale very often..

IMO thats full price for gun only and a good deal for full package Box Docs, holster etc.

It's the box, docs etc...but no holster and pachmayrs. That last part is my issue with it. Like you said though, you do not see them up for sale very often.

If it doesnt have the original wood combat grips at that price I would pass, they are like $200 nowadays.

It would be a real nice deal with the correct grips. You'll pay quite a bit for the correct grips. I've seen guys asking over $200 for the grips.

That's kind of where I'm leaning....I really want either a 24 or a 624...but 8 bills does seem steep with Pachs.

Thanks again for the advice.

I bought my 24-3 with 3" bbl and round back with grips. Paid $850 and am very happy to get it. This is in Louisiana. We don't see many N framed 44 specials down here. There is a recent post that goes like this about gun values. I'll use LA as the starter. OK $850 here, new mexico maybe the same or a bit more. New York, probably close to a grand if and when you can find them. Prices vary from state to state and even within a state. Years ago I bought my mod 10 for $100, this was in new york. At the time most shooters starting to go to the wondernines not much interest in revolvers. Unless you shoot in a pistol league. Somewhere else that mod 10 might have brought 150-200. And those old N frames in 44 special just keep trucking along.
I have 3 624 6.5"bbl, 24-3 4" bbl and 24-3 3" bbl lew horton. Love them all. Think a lot of members have a good regard for the 44 special.

Even if it had some other wood grips; but pacs??? Let him find the grips, dicker on the price or let him keep it. I'd pay that w/o box and docs but right grips. They show up on line once every 2 months or so.

I agree with you guys. We're talking over the internet. I sent him an email and told him I would pass at that price, but if he wanted to negotiate I'd be willing to talk about it. I'm thinking $675-
$700 OTD.

Thank you guys!! You got me through a bad case of "they're not that many for sale, gotta have it disease."

On a side note, they also made some in 44 Magnum as well SS in both models.
I had the pair in blue but decided they served no practicle purpose,
Too big to carry too small to shoot on the range comfortably and sold them off to fund something else.

They are nice guns but are you considering carrying it or do you just want it ?

Im more of a 4" barrel fan and picked up a 4" pre lock 44 mag Mountain gun instead.

I purchased mine along with three shooting partners when first issued.
Payed $380 out the door. Abt 1983
Best purchase I ever made
Has been a joy to own
Thousands of rounds with no problems
Factory grips are not the best option--nice to look at--not so good on a 5 day hunting trip--rain --snow.
My son will love to have mine--any price within reason should work for you if your a shooter.
I would purchase again
I am not a collector--I live to hunt and shoot--great tool
The best to you

I do not care to get another .44 special, because I do not care to support another caliber in the volume I consider appropriate (thousands of rounds) and do not handload (yet). My 296 is a niche weapon and I can get by with a more modest supply of ammo. If I wanted one, this configuration would be very appealing, even without the box/papers/etc.

The grip issue (and frankly, box and papers, too) is at best an irrelevant inanity - most of the factory grips on S&Ws are heinous for serious shooting. I am not a collector (although "accumulator" may yet be a good description). With few exceptions, I carry a sidearm only for unplanned negative social encounters (if expected/predicted, one should be elsewhere if possible, or take a rifle). Anything inconsistent with fighting is not important.

Many years ago I paid quite a bit less than that for this one but the original grips were gone as was the holster. Found both on fleabay...paid too much for the grips but got the holster at a steal. Looks to me like that price you were given may be a touch high.

I found the factory combat grips don't fit my hand well, so I modified a pair of Rd to Sq conversion grips. But, I keep the original grips in the box for the someday next owner.

$799.00 for everything but the factory grips. Ask yourself how often do these come up for sale, and what would be the price if you could find a total package?

If it were me, and its' not, I would buy the revolver then save the $$ for a proper set of grips, or even better order a set of stag grips from Patrick Grashorn. Best of luck with whatever you do.

I've had one for many years, and I committed the travesty of customizing mine! Tuned by Andy Cannon, Millett rear sight, and a set of Hogue's made by Guy Hogue himself when he still had the custom shop. It's a sweet piece and I wouldn't trade it for anything. If I wasn't so lazy I would post a pic. Oh, and the original parts got traded away years ago!

If you are not a shooter pass.
Collecters are a different breed , no use for hoarders.
I have owned mine since issued.
Issued stocks - grips suck.
Have fired over 15,000 rounds since 1983.
If you do not buy--Sens me the Firearms dealers FFL number
Payed 380$ plus 6% tax and 25 dollars transfer fee. 28 years ago.
I think life is short--Buy to shoot
The best to you
J. Wilkes

I shoot everything I own. I'll shoot 1000 plus rounds a month, more in the winter. I'm gettting one , I'm convinced.

You won't regret it. I'm a shooter/collector (no false distinctions here!) and got one of these ANIB about three or four years ago. I still haven't wrung it out, but its day is coming.

$799 is an OK price for one of these.
