Default 629 Mountain Gun .44 mag or .45 colt?

Looking at two 629 Mountain Guns...one is a .45 colt and the other a .44 magnum...both 4 inch barrels.

Both guns are pre-lock and appear to be in similar very good to excellent condition.

Which would you buy and why?

Thanks.

Easy. The 44.
No such thing as a 629 anything in 45 Colt.
Why? Simple. I have 1000s of 44 cases and bullets as well as 6 other 44 revolvers, magnum and special.

Just to correct/clarify...the 45 Colt MG should be a model 625...the only 629 MG is 44 mag.

I have both, and don't think you can go wrong with either. It depends on a lot of factors...do you already reload or have ammo for either (as Taroman pointed out)? What do intend to use it for? For typical factory loads, I find the 45 Colt a little more comfortable to shoot in the relatively light-framed MG. Obviously 45 Colt can be loaded pretty hot too, but 44 mag will really buck at the hotter loads. The 629 has the advantage of being able to shoot 44 specials if so inclined (though those are not cheap to buy if you are not reloading them). I wouldn't want to part with either, but if forced to pick just one it would probably be the 625 45 Colt, since I have other 44 mags that are a little heavier and easier to shoot.

I have to echo the previous author, I chose a .44 due to the fact that I already have one with dies, brass, bullets, etc. for that caliber. I've fired .45 LC model 25's and wasn't all that impressed over the vast range that .44 has. I almost traded into a 625 Mountain Gun that came with dies, brass, etc. and a couple hundred pre-loaded rounds, his price was too high but it had everything I was looking for. I lucked into my present 629-2 from a friend of mine and after a few tweaks am very happy with it. I really like .44 special rounds for plinking and general all around good fun, very accurate when worked out for your particular pistol, the 4" barrel doesn't hinder accuracy all that much at ranges under 20yds. My vote is for .44, all around better round.

I'd go with the 44 but that's just me, if you reload then both can work (you can warm up the 45 a little), if you don't then stick to the 44, cause you have way more choices of factory loads .

Thanks guys for the good ideas. Sounds pretty unanimous for the .44.

At this time, I don't reload. The only .45 Colt I shoot is occasionally in my Governor, and don't have a lot of .45 Colt on hand, so I would pretty much be starting from scratch with either one.

Will narrow my search to the .44. thanks again.

.45 Colt here.
For where I live in the Southeast it's all I'll ever need.
I can't afford to shoot "factory" anything right now so reloading is on my horizon.
Wouldn't turn down a 629-4 Mtn Gun if one came my way though.

Boy, although I admire the .44 magnum, it's not the answer for all platforms. And there is a world of difference between "usable power" versus too much blast report, poor second shot response time, etc.

The .45 Colt in the Mountain Gun platform is probably the best combo ever. Low end, yet highly effective magnum performance, best snake shot capacity, and the fastest response for multiple shots, with a big bore, heavy weight bullet. What's not to like on a lightweight barrel frame?

And for those who go for "option B" .44 Special, the .45 Colt, with low pressure recoil, faster second shot response speed, and a bigger, more effective bullet, will win in this combo every time. Just ask the dead bear :-).

Oh, BTW, I'm a shooter, not a collector.

Somewhere along the way I found more 45s than I did 44s.
Don't know how it happened it just did.

I just turned my last 44 magnum into a 45 Colt revolver.

The 629-4 in 45 Colt ctg Completed 5/27 Sights,thumbpiece,stocks.

When I load 45 Colt a bit hotter it is a 260 gr. semi wadcutter at about
1000 f.p.s. and it still kicks me less than any 44 magnum.

Shoot the 45 Colt mountain gun and you'll see what we mean.

Keep and collect brass and get yourself a nice single stage press.
You can handload a couple hundred rounds in a casual afternoon
and save tons of money.

Good luck
Allen

For some reason, neither of the .44 Mountains I've owned shot as well as 29-2's or -3's. I sold them both. The .45 Colts however are a pure pleasure and they are my favorite in the Mountain Gun format.

I have both guns and love both but I would pick up the 45LC. I say this because I enjoy the push of the 45 rather than the kick of the 44, but being that you dont reload you can use this as an excuse to start so you can feed you Gov & MG or you can just stay with your 44 setup. You really can go wrong wither way.

P.S. what were the prices?

Don't laugh (I only say that since many forum members go off on the Governor), but how much more might I enjoy shooting the .45 Colt Mountain Gun compared to my Governor?

I really enjoy shooting the Gov with the.45 Colt, as much as I enjoy my 686+ 4 inch.

Smee78,

the .44's are still on GB auction currently mid $500's, but still plenty of time left to go higher. The .45 is LGS and perhaps never fired (which won't last if I buy it). Low $600's.

So about how many dollars do I need to invest in loading equipment, and about how much can I save per loaded round vs factory? I am currently spending approx .70 per .45LC factory round.

The advantage of the .45 MG is you can shoot the ammo in your Governor too.

The advantage of the .44 Magnum MG is the power of the cartridge and availability of ammo .
Also if you ever intend to use it in the field with a partner rifle there is probably a larger selection of rifles chambered in .44 than .45.
Maybe Im wrong, its just my opinion.

You can get started reloading for a couple hundred dollars on up.Rounds cost about .15 using cast bullets and your old brass.

I have both, just can't warm up to the 44, would prefer the standard 629. There's just something about the 625 45 Colt I really like. It's funny, I like a 44 Mag, & have a couple, but the 45 Colt ctg seems ideal in a Mountain Gun. My opinion, FWIW.

My S&W experience started with a new 625-7 MG in .45 Colt - a gift from my wife ($529 then - new.) 9/02. My second S&W was later that month - a 4" 625-8 in .45 ACP (My first with an IL!). My third S&W was a 629MG, it followed my entry into reloading - for .45 Colt. Both MGs were gripped with Ahrends grips, the 629MG getting it's own .500 Magnum grips several years later - when it finally graduated to 'real' Magnums. I replaced it 4/06 with a standard new current production 4" 629-6 and have been much happier. Days later, I swapped a Ruger for another MG - a 625-6 MG - in .45 Colt.

I prefer the standard production 629 to the 629 MG for several reasons. It's OR front and white outline rear sight beat the MG's black/black, according to my 'mature' peepers. Then there is the larger hammer and trigger - I just like them better. The nearly two additional ounces of mass in the production 4" 629 is mostly at the muzzle due to it's non-tapered barrel. The muzzle seems to stay down better - but I never A-B'ed it and the 629MG at the same session. I would prefer a similar stock 625 in .45 Colt - if such existed. It doesn't. I had an opportunity to trade for a used LN 625-6 MG - in .45 Colt - within days of acquiring the production 629 - and did so happily. I love the 625MG in .45 Colt... obviously! It would be my choice in MGs. If I decided that I needed a .44 Magnum 4"-er, however, it'd be a standard production model - easier to find used and available new.

I don't have any of the "6" guns, but I just bought a 25-13 Mountain Gun in 45 Colt. I probably wouldn't have looked at it seriously if it had been a 44 Magnun. Now that's because I already have a 4", Model 29, I admit.

But I've got a simple Lee Hand Press and a set of Lee 45 Colt dies. So I'm set to load 45 Colt ammo. With a couple hundred rounds of brass, and a box of cast bullets, I'm good to go. The Lee dies come with a little powder dipper that gives a known load from a list of powders. No special powder handling stuff needed unless you want more variety in your loads. I've always been happy with the dipper myself. Even buying a few other little simple hand tools, I'm into reloading about a hundred bucks for one caliber, about the cost of a couple of boxes of factory 45 Colt ammo, and it all fits in a cardboard box when not being used. I spend a couple of hours one night working the brass, and a couple hours the next night recharging the cases.

A little slow I suppose, but plenty fast enough for me.

Drew mentions that he doesn't see the Mountain Guns shooting quite as well as the standard guns. I agree with him. I also agree with the thoughts above. S&W put the heavy barrel on Model 29s for a reason. It makes them much easier to shoot accurately, IMO. I think MGs inherently shoot very well, but, as a practical matter, I believe they are just much harder to shoot with the same precision as guns with the target-contour barrel. Something to consider.

With that in mind, if you want the tapered-barrel gun, the .45 Colt might be a better choice, particularly if you do not handload. Shooting full-steam 44 Magnums in a MG is not an enjoyable thing. If you handload, it probably could go the other way. In that case, you can make either caliber do whatever you need, and if you take your gun away from home, hunting or whatever, you can find 44 Magnum ammo almost anywhere - if you lose your supply. The Colt is a bit harder to find. If that is a concern, the decision might tip slightly to the 44 side.

My own MG is a square-butt 629, but if I could have rigged up a similar 625, I might have. Either gun will be nice to have, but you will end up shooting more .45 Colt-level loads no matter which one you buy, so the .45 may be the most logical choice.

Which would you buy and why?
The day I bought my slightly used 625 Mountain Gun, I actually had to make the choice between it and a 4" 629.

The same consigner had just dropped them off at the local pro shop 5 minutes before I arrived. The shop owner knew I would be showing up shortly for my weekly range time, so he didn't even put them in the shelf. They were sitting on the counter waiting for me when I went in.

Both were in the same condition, and both had an asking price of $450. I already was re-loading .45 Colt so I made an offer on the 625 and went in to shoot, came out and left with 625 for $400.

I never regretted my choice, but often wish I'd had a little extra cash available at the time.

There's something attractive about a MG in .45 LC, but I'll stick with a .44 Mag for now. I load my own, and have a bucket of .44 SPL with hard cast SWC just for fun. As tough as .45 LC is, a .44 Mag can be loaded to twice the energy if needed.

Theoretically you could get the same performance between .45 and .44 SPL, but you'd be off the loading charts in into Cooper Country. I wouldn't want one of those to get into a lesser revolver some day.

I would buy the 45 Colt because it is one of the few guns that have left the S&W factory in that caliber that Allen-frame hasn't already added to his collection.

Since you do not reload I would buy the 44. You can get 44 special loads for plinking and also shoot the 44 mag by going to almost any sports store. I don't think much of the 45LC factory offerings unless your shooting something like the Buffalo Bore ammo.

Interesting topic and a ton of information for anyone to digest. In my early days of shooting an uncle had a .44 magnum Smith from the 50's, my cousin "borrowed" one day while we went out on a road-trip. First lesson we all learned is never fire off a round from inside the vehicle, second lesson I learned was how the S&W .44 magnum bucked back into the web of my hand between thumb and forefinger. I did not care for the recoil and did not pursue owning a big Smith. I did get into shooting .44 magnum with an old 3-screw Ruger Superblackhawk, I loved the way the 7.25" barrel would flip reducing felt recoil significantly, however follow-up shots were impaired in the same manner, that and the fact that it was single action only. Years later I got into a M29 w/6.5" barrel and have enjoyed shooting it over the years, tending towards .44 special but feeling competent out to 25yds with full magnum loads. Then recently I got a lucky score on a 629-2 first edition Mountain Revolver, I did not care for the recoil of the lighter barrel but was set on using while afield. I called up magnaport and they recommend a quad trapazoid porting job for a 4" pistol, sent it off and am very happy with the results, so much so that I wouldn't hesitate to do it to any other pistol designed for such use...I don't think it would be of any real use in a pistol designed for target shooting like a .44 special. I also have never cared for pachmeyer grips and have always liked the way magnum coke profile target stocks fill my hand, I ordered up a set from Kurac and John outdid himself, the fit is perfect. Haven't tried the completed pistol out yet but am sure it will live up to what I expect. This big pistol sits in a vintage Lawrence holster and gives me all the comfort I ever need while afield, snakes or bears. Im a big enough guy that can hide a full size 1911 in the small of my back with shorts and a t-shirt, I never wear anything less and I don't really care if anything shows due to the fact this is an open carry state and I'm licensed for concealed carry if need be. Its not uncommon to see people packing openly and personally I believe as Jefferson said "An armed society is a polite society."

I would buy the .45 Colt gun and immediately take the cylinder out and put the cylinder and a check for $87.00 in a box and send them to Pinnacle High Performance Custom Gunsmithing along with a note requesting it to be cut for moon clips. You then have the ultimate .45 to shoot .45 Long Colt, .460 Rowland and .45 ACP

A lesson in pressure, recoil and fast second shot capability to tame the wild, which is why they call it "Mountain Gun?"

Approximately 13,500 PSI for a 255 grain bullet will yield 743 fps for a .44 Special versus 926 fps for a larger .45 bullet of same weight. So my point to the .44 mag lovers: The .45 Colt does everything better at lower pressures with a bigger bullet and faster 2nd shot response with a "lighter platform" gun. If you boost .44 pressures, you lose, since you also defeat faster second shot capability.

For those who study and understand shooting caliber dynamics on a lighter, packing gun, the .45 Colt makes more sense. This combo is the best for its intended purpose.

Thanks for the lesson. So tell me, I am going to recover more quickly for a second shot from a .45/255/926 FPS than I will with a 44/255/743 FPS - gun weighing the same in both cases? Check that again for me, please.

If you don't reload, the 44s far easier to feed, and there's a wide range of 44 Special & 44 Magnum factory ammo available. Only the 357 Magnum has more choices. If you reload, and especially if you cast, either one can be loaded to perform about the same, within reason. The 45 Colt MG is okay if you're not looking for top end performance, and if you want to shoot a steady diet of heavy loads, I'd suggest passing on Mountain Guns completely. They can be really uncomfortable when loaded hot.

Geeze Louise, that's a tough one! I can see why you're looking for advice.

If it were me, I'd go straight to the 45. Reasons stated above point directly to the reasons. Bigger loads moved more efficiently and ultimately bigger loads due to dimensions. Something in a 275g or 300g bullet for instance.

Moderate velocity with big chunks of lead are effective and in this case a 4" sidearm for packing in the woods screams .45 Colt, at least to me.

This comes from a guy that's a dyed in the wool .44 guy. I have... many 44's in both magnum and special.

If you want something accurate and hard hitting without the need for velocity much over 1000fps so it shoots easy, the Colt is your huckleberry.

That said, why not go on a mac and cheese diet for a while and get both?

I think the lighter .45 Colt has less cylinder inertia for faster DA speed. Also, a hundred feet plus per second difference with the same psi is an advantage, even if pumped up to 1100 fps.

I don't know of any shooter who has tried both, that can't tell the difference of milder blast, lower pressure recoil, faster 2nd shot pickup of a .45 Colt, as equally compared to similar .44 performance.

I first read this thread when the only answers were, "Get the .44." I have been mulling the question all day and have concluded I would favor .45 Colt in a Mountain Gun, mostly for the reasons asserted by the .45 fans. I like the .44 Magnum as much as anybody (well, maybe not as much as its most ardent supporters), but I think I'd prefer a Magnum in a specific barrel length to be as heavy as possible, even if we are talking about only an ounce or two; that leaves out the Mountain Gun configuration. In my admittedly limited experience, the .45 Colt is an easily manageable round in all but the lightest and most compact revolvers; I can't say that about the .44 Magnum.

Besides, there is something just inherently cool in having Colt's iconic cartridge chambered in what was, until the X-frames came along, S&W's largest frame. An All-American revolver! What's not to like?

My personal choice, logistacly speaking, would be the 44mag. Pretty simple for me because I have all the reloading stuff for 44. Anyways.........Seeing how you already have the "gov" if I were you I'd do the 45 LC in the MG then have it fixed up to shoot 45 ACP also.

Thanks for all the advice. Since I already have the Governor that shoots 45 LC, do you believe the "shootability" and enjoyment of the 625 MG will be that much different or better than the Gov? Have any of you shot both?

I have not shot a Gov, but I have shot, using the loosest definition of the term, the Gov's equivalent, a Judge. MG all the way! The Judge wasn't unpleasant to shoot, but the MG is actually pleasant to shoot. A push instead of a punch for recoil. Another reason I chose the 45 MG is because I like the combination of looks and comfort. I can throw some heavier loads from my Colt with wood grips that would leave my hands stinging with the unnecessary kick of the Mag. The .44 Mag is a great round, but the Mountain Gun isn't the platform where it shines. Downloading to .44 Specials is great, but with how expensive they are, you could buy 45 Colt, or if you want to go a little lower with recoil, you can buy the 45 Special, er, I mean the 45 Schofield. Cowboy rounds are a hoot to shoot!

Definately the 44 Mag. In the S&W it can be loaded hotter and has a MUCH wider choice of ammo, including 44 Special.
It can be loaded down to 45 Colt Specs, and it is much easier to find 44 Mag ammo out and about than 44 Mag.

My Choice the 45colt

I would opt for a Lee single stage press or turret. They are cheap and effective. When you start loading .45 colt the same bullets and primers will work in .45 acp; though I tend to shoot 200 gr LSWC in .45 ACP and 250gr in .45 colt. Even upper range .45 colt loads (900-1000fps) are easy to handle in the mountain gun. As you can see I prefer the round to square conversion grips. I own and load for several 4" .44 mag revolvers, but not in the mountain gun configuration. Since I shoot 95% self loaded ammo, availability of factory is a moot point; however as someone pointed out if you want to shoot .44 special you will be paying in the .45 colt factory ammo range anyway.

I'd pick the 45 Colt, in the Mountain Gun format. For a 4" 44 Mag I like the standard heavier barrel. Too much recoil for quick, double action shooting in the light barrel 44 magnums.....for me anyways. The Mountain Gun in 45 Colt is about the perfect combination of caliber and weight.

Is there any reason why the cylinder could not be cut for moon clips allowing use of .45 LC as well as .45 ACP? I would live to have this gun in .45ACP.

As long as you use it in .45 ACP with clips, probably not. If you use it in .45 Colt, the rim will not be fully supported. If you add that to the usual generous tolerances for .45 Colt chambers, it is not an ideal condition, but unless you are a real devil about accuracy (like some of us try to be ), that factor is probably not that critical. For me, it is enough so that I would not do it on my own gun. The other factor you might consider is that the gun cannot be fired with .45 ACPs without clips, since the cartridge cannot properly headspace without them. Generally, firing .45 ACPs in a long cylinder is not a real hot set-up all the way around, not to mention one with a chamber that is not proper for the cartridge.

The .45 ACP should NEVER be confused with, nor erroneously equilibrated with the .45 Colt if one is talking anything beyond factory ballistics. The reason is because when handloaded the .45 Colt moves into the .44 Magnum class with ease.
The choice between .44 Magnum and .45 Colt in ANY handgun really boils down to whether the user is handloading or not. For the handloader the .45 Colt is the way to go hands down because it will sling a bigger, heavier slug at "equal" velocity with lower pounds per square inch chamber pressure. Of course handloaders already know all this.
IF I were planning to rely on factory ammo I'd probably opt for the .44 Mag, though it is worth knowing that once can now choose heavily loaded .45 factory ammo so even someone welded to buying their ammo might still choose the .45 Colt caliber.
Of course the "right" answer might be to search out a S&W .460 because it can digest everything in .45 caliber from mild to wild with ease!

No discussion of .44 vs.45 Mountain Guns would be complete without a link to Mr. Linebaugh's articles. For those not familiar with him he is a well established custom gunsmith that has specialized in the development of the very large bore rounds that are available today. The .475, .480, and .500's are his specialty. He has the equipment to test rounds thoroughly and has developed rounds that he has used extensively in several of his field carry revolvers. He can carry what ever he wants in grizzly country and carries a smith 25-5. It's worth the read.

Gunnotes...Smith & Wesson Mod 25-5

Also to the moon clip question: 45 colt cylinder can be set up to run with 45acp in moon clips. You can still load 45 colt rounds without the clips. If I recall there is a shop that specialized in this called pinnacle. You just have to send the cylinder so no expensive shipping.

The 44 mag without hesitation. Partly because I already own several
44s and have dies and components for reloading but also for the
simple fact that the 44 is so versatile. Yeah when loaded to maximum
performance levels the 45 can throw a bigger heavier slug than the
44 can but who is going to shoot very many heavy loads in a Mountain
Gun? The smaller case with less airspace makes the 44 more user friendly with light to mid-range loads.

Lots of food for thought here. For pure enjoyment, I'd go with the .45 Colt. I doubt that you would want to shoot the .44 at full house levels very much, anyway. Having said that, I think you would be better served with the .44 mag version, simply because it's so versatile. If you want grizzly-stompin' loads, they are available over the counter, as are mid-range target loads. As someone else pointed out, if you ever wanted to pair the pistol with a rifle, there are more choices available in .44.

Good luck!

Everytime i'm torn between buying two guns i usually end up getting both anyway. I say get both.

For the rifle in 44cal i chose the marlin 444s sporter.

But if the gun will be used for protection in the wilds i'd go with the 44mag. The 45 long colt can be super reloaded in the ruger super / blackhawk.

Like usual I've found this thread a little late in the game....but for me the .44 would be the choice because I don't reload.

Also, I don't have a Mtn gun, but do have a 29-5 with a 4inch barrel & 29-6 with a 6inch barrel (I prefer the blued guns in most cases) that I carry with full-load 240 grain Mag loads when hunting Elk in the western states and with 200 grain Special loads when deer hunting here in the southeast. I don't hunt with the pistols but like to carry them when scouting and hiking around in the area I will be hunting in.

A few years back I had Pinnacle cut the cylinder of a 625 MG to work with .45 acp on moon clips. It still worked fine with .45 colt. I could even use full moon clips with certain .45 colt ammo.

I'd probably go the 625 route in an MG and leave the .44 mag to the standard 629.

.44M loads in a Mountain Gun can sting your hand a bit. They're especially hard to shoot DA since you have to adjust your grip a bit to accommodate the extra reach. That said, no revolver is good for a quick double-tap, and I can shoot 6 aimed rounds of .44M in 4 seconds SA. It works best after the first dozen rounds, because my hand loses some feeling (or I learn to adjust) If you have to stop something 4-legged in one shot (and don't have a rifle handy), then .44M or heavier is the way to go.

I'm attracted to .45 Colt for the tradition and considerable power advantage over .44 SPL. The excuse I make for not jumping in is that I reload, and it's hard to sort .45 from .44 cases. More likely, it's the cost of one or more .45's and $250 for a Dillon caliber kit.

Handbook loads for .44 SPL seem pretty weak to me, and a magnum frame could certainly take more, but I wouldn't want sub-magnum loads to end up in somebody's SAA and splinter it.

The 625 Mountain Gun has nice lines, and tend to be much harder to find than .44M MG's. I find a 3" .44M no harder to shoot and somewhat easier to carry. In retrospect, I might go for the .45 version.

Big help, eh!

I don't think you get the purpose of a mountain gun. I think the whole idea of choosing a mountain gun so that your second shot comes milliseconds faster after taking your first shot is ludicrous. Hit and kill your target with your first shot, and a follow up won't be needed, but if it is...AIM BETTER!!! and you have five more, hitting harder, each and every shot with the magnum round. It is like a hunter, spraying and praying that he'll connect with one of the shots in his magazine. That's a newbie//Hollywood Action Flick approach, not one of any hunter ("mountain" or otherwise) I've ever respected. The best shot to drop live targets with is always the first.

There is no substitute for well-aimed fire. It's more effective!

To the OP's question? I don't know. I like them both, but wanted the extra weight of a normal barrel profile in my 4" 629, but not so much weight as to want the unfluted cylinder and underlug barrel of some magnum models.
