Gang,

I have cornered a 629-1 4 inch Mountain gun in .44 Mag. Thin barrel, cylinder's front edges rounded, plain black pinned front sight, flash chromed hammer and trigger, and a set of awful Pachmayr 'Gripper' grips. In pretty good condition.

He wants $850. I bet I could talk him down a bit. So this an ok price or way to high?

You oughta be able to talk him down a mite or two on the absence of the factory stocks. Seems a little high to me.

Seems alittle high. I think 650 would be aceptable.

I bought a 629 Mountain Gun from Cabela's yesterday for $585 during their Hometown Hero sale. Original tag was $650. An extremely clean gun with a trigger job and some other custom work to make it smooth as silk. The brand new 629 at Cabelas is $900. I cant wait to take mine out.

Hate to tell you this but the original Mountian guns (revolvers) came from the factory with Pachmayr grippers as original equipment. I have an original and it came with the Pachmayrs.

Mine now sports Ahrends, and the originals have been relegated to a grip box. $650.00 if cherry is a fair price. 5,000 were made.

Didn't the mountain revolves start at -2 or 3, if its a dash 1 and says mountain gun its been worked on

The first production edition of the series was 629-2, and was named the "Mountain Revolver". The next edition was -4, IIRC, and carried the "Mountain Gun" name.

Here is a not so good pic of my 629-4MG wearing Ahrends maple grips. It a pre lock and I paid $650ish used. It had the org rubber grips on it when I got it. I think the OP's price is a bit hi but you know what they say, (you never pay to much, you just buy to early).

850 is aggressive. I picked up a used 629-1 with 8-3/8" barrel for $475. New factory 4-1/4" barrel from S&W was $135, and probably $100 to have it installed and a basic service check up. That's a DIY Mountain Gun for roughly $700. I'd pass on that 850 and keep looking.

I've seen -2 MGs hit a grand at auction, but the more mainstream models seem to run $600-700.00 or so.

Well that does make it interesting.

This one definably has a 629-1, flash chromed hammer and trigger, and thin barrel (I have a regular 629-1 4 inch bbl with a heavy barrel and I know the difference) as well as the cylinder face is kind of recessed, that is it is not squared off but very noticeably rounded off edges.

It also does not have any 'Mountain Gun' laser engraved on the barrel either. And the front sight is pinned in and not like standard 4 inch sight that is part of the barrel.

So was this a regular production item?

I have Mountain Guns in 629, 29, 57 & 625. The just got the 29, paid $650 for it; used, excellent condition. I'd go $700, maybe $750 tops for an excellent condition 629. There are 2 on GunBroker right now, starting prices of $700 and no bids.

If it doesn't have "Mountain Gun" engraved on the barrel it's not a Mountain Gun.

The 629-2 Mountain Revolver is not marked "Mountain Gun". It just has std roll marks on both sides of the barrel. "Smith & Wesson" on the left, and "44 Magnum" on the right. And of course, the black powder chamfer on the front edge of the cylinder.

Ah.. black powder chamber, so that is what it is. But still, a 629-1, ONE, and thin barrel with pinned in front sight?

My -3 mountain gun came with Hogue grips with the metal S&W emblems installed in each side of the grip. Flash cromed hammer/trigger.......Bought NIB.

I would say that is at least $100.00 to high. I picked up my NIB old stock model 57 Mountain Gun for $725.00 a few months ago.

IMHO, that is NOT a factory revolver. It's a clone assembled with a parts bin barrel and cylinder. Buy it if you like it, but be aware that it's not the real deal.

My mistake! It was a 629-2, even original box came with it (talked him down some.) Yes I got it.

Now everything makes perfect sense! I have one just like it, as do many here.

Now for the grips (rubber isn't my thing.)

Guess I'll have to look for some RB wood grips that fit me well.

Strangely the Miculek grips I have don't quite fit! The frame must be 1/10 of a inch longer (or the wood fills that much at the bottom.) Bummer.

But I am interested in grips that are for hard use, not show. I might see if the RB grips I have on my 3 inch 625 .45 acp fit. They are S&W. Bit thick but I'll see tonight.

Congrats, those early Mountain revolvers are really nice guns.

BTW, those beveled cylinder edges are referred to as "Chamfered" with an "F".

Fired that baby today along with my 629-1 4 incher and my Ruger Security Six blue 4 incher which I picked it up for $300, 80 or so shells included about a month ago.

25 yard groups, off hand, single action, with 240 gr LSW hard cast slugs with 6.2 gr Unique, were all in the 3 inch black circle (but then I did the same with the Ruger to with Federal 158gr JSP .357s... but I knew that Ruger was a ringer already.)

Everything went perfect. Excellent gun. Now just where is my bullwhip and Fredora?
