Unhappy Bought the wrong grips for my 657

I have a 657 no dash that I bought used some time ago. The previous owner had rubber grips on it, a trend I have never understood and cannot tolerate. I bought a set of new Smith & Wesson square butt target grips to replace the ugly Hogues. However, when I removed the used tire grips, I was surprised to find a round butt grip frame. I didn't know that there were any 6" 657's from the mid 80's that sported a round butt grip. I guess I'll have to continue my search for the round to square conversion grips that Smith markets.

I forgot to ask a couple of things in the original post. Does anyone else have a 657 no dash with a round butt grip frame, other than the 3"? And what grips came on it from the factory?

Thanks,
Steve

My only 657 no dash is an 8 3/8" barrel, and it's square butt. I have never seen a round butt no dash with a 6" barrel. Interesting. You want to sell your grips?

Other than the Lew Horton guns and 103951, which were both 3", I've never heard of or seen a 6" RB. Sounds like you have an unusual bird there. Maybe someone else out there has one. I will check with a friend who has quite a collection of .41 Mags to see what he has. Hogues were used on some of the special variations, but they came later than the no dash. I believe the no dash were SB with checkered GA's. I like any .41 Mag!

Just checked. He has a 3" RB 657 but has not seen a 6" RB. He has 14 57's, 58's and 657's.

There is always the possibility it was re-barreled. I guess the only way to know is to letter it. Not sure why someone would do that (re-barrel a 3" to 6") but hey... people parkerize or duracoat stainless guns, so go figure...

It's possible that someone converted a square butt grip frame to round butt. It's also possible that it's a later engineering change and just not stamped correctly.

Is the backstrap serrated?
Is the rear sight squared off or radiused at the front?
What's the serial number prefix?
Got photos?

Perhaps I will overcome my technophobic tendencies, borrow my wife's camera and post some photos. In the meantime, the revolver has an ANE prefix, 1986 production, which places it in the same timeframe as the Lew Horton 3" 657's. I do have a 657-3 that has all the later modifications, including the round butt but the referenced revolver is definately from the 1986 vintage. I can't imagine that the previous owner would have changed a 3" barrel for a 6", of course I can't imagine anyone ever parting with a .41 magnum either. I know that the local gunstore calls me the black hole of Smith & Wessons, once they come into my possession they will never be sold again until my children liquidate their inheritance.

I believe the 657 Mountain Gun that I gave my son for graduation has a round butt, too.
