Default 640-1 .357. Anyone?

Found this 640-1 .357 in like new condition. My S&W book shows it 1996, but the inclosed fired casing envelope was stamped 3-8-2010. Owner said he bought it new 2 years ago from Bud's Gun Shop and it had the factory engraving. Did it sit at the factory all those years? Anyone have experience with the 640?

I've got one. I carry it quite a bit during the summer. Nice little gun with .38s and +38s. but I reserve .357 mags for the 19.

I have one I carry in a cross-draw holster for driving. I bought it in 1995 for $430.

Magnum loads will light up the area!!!

My 640-1 doesn't look as fancy as yours. Mine was shipped in 2001 and has been a great CCW. I barely even notice its there when I carry it. I do notice when I fire .357 mag out of it but all that being said, it not as bad as I originally thought it would be. I have changed the grips over to the originaly Uncle Mikes style grips. As for your strange ship date, its possible that its from a later batch of 640-1 production and got held back for engraving for a few years.

Post the serial number and we can tell you when it was born.
It definitely wasn't in 2010, as it doesn't have a lock. (That's a good thing).
I bought one new when they were first introduced in about 1996. Carried it constantly. I only stopped carrying it when I got a M340PD a few years ago. The M640-1 is a great carry revolver. Yeah, it kicks a bit with full power Magnum loads since it weighs about 23 oz. In comparison to the 12 oz. M340PD, it is a delight though. That said, both of them were always stoked with Federal 125 grain magnums. I just didn't shoot hundreds of them in an afternoon.

My 640-1 is the only J-frame I own. Heavy enough to practice with regularly, yet light enough to carry comfortably - even on the ankle.

Forged parts, no "innovations", everything you need in a revolver and nothing you don't.

Buy it, shoot it, love it. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

I have baby-brother.....a 640 ND and it's been a good one. I have the ND because I found it at a very good price. The dash-1's usually command asking prices of $600 and higher around here. I don't shoot much 357-mag from a j-frame anyway, but it's not a bad thing having that option. It's one of my J's I'll never get rid of.

It's a CNP57xx. Yes, it handles very well.
