... from places like Buds or Whittakers? I ask because I'm thinking of doing transfers. Dealers around here don't carry many revolvers, so I can't really look at any in person.

I'm wondering the same thing. I was debating between either a 686ssr or a 627pro but seemed to see where a lot of guys were getting canted barrels. In checking Bud's policy I noticed that if the pistol arrives with a factory defect and you see it before making the transfer, Bud's will take it back and even make arrangements for return shippng on their dime. So it would appear that while there is the possibility of being dissapointed at least it won't cost you anything as long as you can spot the defect before making the transfer. I would guess that if you can't see any cant to the barrel it should be okay.

Ordering online without being able to physically examine any firearm can be risky, but sometimes there is no other option. A least if you do get a canted barrel S&W will correct it even though it's a hassle. It's a shame so many revolvers are leaving the factory like this. I was looking at several 686s at my LGS and 3 out of 5 had canted barrels.

Before you get too worried, think about this ... how many revolvers does S&W ship in a given month? Now compare that # with the amount of canted barrel complaints posted on this forum within the same time frame. What's the ratio? 1 in 1,000? 1 in 5,000? 1 in 10,000? There's not much to be concerned with.

10-4 on that, won't that kind of thinking cause you to stay in bed so you won't run the risk spraining anything if you get out?

Geeze people, do you really think this is an epidemic? Others have said the internet allows small numbers of complaints to be seen as a massive failure of QA. I think they're spot on. Do people get magnifying glasses and micrometers out to obsess over incredibly small perceived defects?

What human product is perfect? Answer, none.

Bottom line, S&W and Ruger are THE sources for quality revolvers. If you don't like them, you're relegated to lower quality brands. Don

Three out of five had canted barrels! That sounds like alot more than one in a thousand. I can appreciate your concern but I would think that you could advise your FFL transfer person to take a look at the barrel and if there is a cant send it back because you will not accept it.
I find it more than just a hassle having to send a brand new gun back to S&W to be adjusted after spending the kind of money you do for a quality gun from a premier gun manufacturer. I realize that nothing is "perfect" but come on, a canted barrel is too obvious a defect to allow it to get out the factory door.
I consider myself to be a loyal S&W customer but I refuse to be taken advantage of. I want what I paid for no more no less.

I've bought two new S&W revolvers (63 and 686) off of the Internet in the past 6 months and neither had a canted barrel.

Be careful with what Buds policy might be because the FFL you have it sent too may have different ideas. My first internet purchase was through Buds. I was nervous buying a firearm without visually inspecting it first so I made some inquiries with Buds and chose one that Buds actually sends roughly 100 guns a month too here in Tucson. Anyway, I asked this very question of the FFL and was told in front of all customers in the store that it doesnt matter what the defect is. It's "between me, Buds and the manufacturer to get worked out." Either way I have to pay the transfer fee and take the firearm. When it came in, I was glad I had nothing to worry about but, it still made me nervous none the less.

I will add that most 686's with the four and six inch barrels that I have looked at were canted. The 627 PC was canted. Now, I did look at a 2.5 or 2 inch 686+ that was fine, and my new Governor is fine. The 632 Comp Carry was fine, but the 315 Nightguard was not. It seems to be about 60/40. 60 being cant, bad crown, etc, and 40 being OK.

50/50 for me. I ordered two S&W revolvers in the last two months. A 625PC which came in fine, and a 627 pro which came in with a canted barrel. The gun shop I ordered it from sent it back to S&W. It came back straight. Mike

For buying sight unseen, Bud's is about the best you can ask for as far as return options. As mentioned above, check with the receiving FFL to verify their policy as far as $$ if you don't want to accept it.

As far as the barrel canting, (and I'm not a S&W fanboy, apologist, or basher), after reading all this hoopla here, I took a gander at the smith's in one of my LGS. Pressing my nose and greasy mitts to the display case, out of the 18 or so smith's staring back at me, over half had clearly visible canted barrels, and that's just from sighting from the muzzle in a display case. Is that indicative of all new smith's? Heck no, just over 50% of one of my local shop's display inventory. YMMV.

Anyways, good luck with your search and purchase, whatever it be..

Dave

50/50 here also.
#1 A 21-4 had canted barrel among numerous other defects. Against my better judgment, accepted this one. Canted barrel, loose front sight, beveled barrel extension. No more were available. Two trips to S&W and it still had problems. Dumped that dog like a bad habit.
#2 A 442 that's perfect in every respect.

I've bought two Model 10s from Bud's.

The 4" I purchased is awesome and doesn't show too much wear. Shoots to point of aim and has great lockup.

The 3" I ordered looked pretty rough (lots of wear and rust freckles) and was so canted it would practically shoot around corners.

The 3" got traded away. The 4" is my favorite range gun. Bud's Model 10s have been 50/50 for me, albeit with an extremely small sample size.

The gun in my avatar is a Model 64 2" with factory bobbed hammer I grabbed from J&G. It was practically a new gun, and was outfitted with Uncle Mike's grips that looked new as well. I was pretty surprised. It must have spent its entire existence locked up in an armory somewhere. I wouldn't sell it for anything.

This year I've bought four SW revolvers.
Two had canted barrels and were sent back to SW.

So, I'd say you have a 50/50 chance of getting a canted barrel.

There's no excuse for 50% of their revolvers leaving the factory
with canted barrels.

I just wonder what else I'll find wrong after a couple of thousand rounds?

I also bought four S&W's this year, all J-frames, all purchased in person; none with canted barrels. Although, thanks to threads like this one, I did go over each gun pretty well before each purchase.
