986 9mm Moonclips & brass
I was wondering if any 986 9mm owners can enlighten me regarding the brand of brass they use for moonclips. I bought 10 generic moonclips and thought all would be created equal. Not so. The ammo I purchased recently in bulk is not fitting in very well - some of the casings are loose.
Not sure if it is the brass or the moonclip.
This is my first experience with them and I have not fired any rounds yet but I did not expect a fitting issue.
For anyone who owns the 7 round 9mm 986 with moonclips:
1) What brand of moonclip?
2) What brand of ammo fits best for you?
I bought some bulk 9mm by MAXXTech and did not think brand would really matter with this issue. I just want a bunch of clips loaded for range use.

Moonclips by TKCustom.com. He will get you the moons for the brass you are using.
Best brass is Winchester from their White Box ammo. If you want to buy new brass, Starline can't be beat.

Loose rounds?
I have no experience with the moon clips for the 986, however I do have a little experience with moon clips in general!
In this rack are moon clips for the 610, 625, 646, 940, 686 38Super, with an additional 100+ clips not loaded. NONE of these clips hold the rounds "tight"! Some hold the rounds tighter than others and I do not sort my brass by manufacture! If you use round nose bullets they will "fall" into the chamber. That being said, these are all 6 round clips and I have seen people have trouble with the clips that hold more than six rounds! Can you tell I'm a fan of moon clips?

I use TK moon clips and have had no issues with the Federal ammo I have run through it. Honestly, I have had no issues with any of the other brass in this gun.

I have been using TK moon clips and I only use PMC brass and they are a good fit and have no problems for a full season of steel shooting.

I've loaded 986 & the 929 with : Federal,Speer Lawman,IMI,Winchester Ranger in TK clips with no issues. You want a little wobble in the final 'aasembly' to ease positioning for loading on the cylinder.
If they fall out so to speak - now, you have an issue.

I use Ranch brand clips in my 929. Some rounds do fit a little tighter than others but that's to be expected since I'm suing mixed brass. That said, I have had no failures or complaints in several months of using this combination.

Using TK Moonclips mostly, have 20 by "Speed Beez" that I bought on Amazon. The SB clips work just fine, but the TK clips are noticeably prettier so I'll be buying them in the future.
Shoot mostly FreedomAmmo new or reman.
As long as the rounds don't fall out of the clip of their own volition it's a good fit.
I also bought a B.M.T. "Mooner" loader/unloader for the 986 moon clips. Model L9-7. Wasn't cheap, but it's the best possible accessory one could ever have for a revolver that is cut to use moon clips. You will not believe how easy it is to live with moon clips if you have one. BMT Equipped, Inc.

I'd say "nice rack" but every time I say that at work I get slapped.
