Default S&W Product Code/SKU 103624 vs 163624

Hello All,

I am still pretty new to S&W firearms, having recently acquired a 6.5 Model 629-4 with Power Port, and would like to learn a bit more about the Smith Product Code/SKU numbers.

1) From what I've gleened so far, the Smith Product Codes at some point in time were replaced by SKU numbers. Can anyone tell me when this terminology change occured?

2) What, if any, difference is there (other than DOB) between a Model 629 6.5 PP Stainless with Product Code 103624 (and Special Order No. 6183) vs a Model 629 6.5 PP Stainless with SKU 163624?

Thanks for any info! ZT

Default One has an internal lock, and one doesn't.

The gun with the 103624 product code is a pre-lock revolver, while 163624 would be a later model with the internal lock.

The Spec Ord number is actually a date code indicating when the gun was built. With rare exceptions, the first digit indicates the year, while the next three indicate the day of the year. Since product number 103624 was built between 1996 and 2001, Spec Ord 6183 would indicate the 183rd day of 1996. Taking into account that it was a leap year, the 183rd day would be July 1, 1996.

I used to own a 629-4 built that same year. It was a great revolver!

"Product Code" and "Stock Keeping Unit (SKU)" are two phrases for the same thing. It just became eaiser to say SKU than product code

It is the difference between Scater Gun and Shotgun
