Canted Barrel Update
Smith & Wesson has had my 686-6 for 2 weeks now. They told me it would be 4-5 weeks because they were closed for a while. But I Chomped at the bit a little and decided to call and get a status. The rep was very nice a d he said he thinks it was already worked on and they had to replace the frame. So I asked him what about the barrel, I want a new one because when they overtorqued it, it crimped the barrel. He said they replaced the barrel also. I told him my gunsmith will be inspecting it upon arrival. I'm pretty sure they replaced the barrel though, because the frame is 90% of a new gun so why wouldn't they replace the barrel? He said I'm basically getting a brand new gun! It should be at my local gunshop Thursday or Friday!!! Please chime in!

Chalk another up for HORRIBLE S&W QA dept...I'm actually wondering if they have a QA dept, or if they even know what QA stands for.

Used Smith & Wessons without the lock usually don't have canted barrels. I had one that did. Three tweaks with the correct frame wrench solved the problem in 5 minutes, YMMV.

received my 686-6 back from smith and wesson. They shipped it to my local dealer(Not the one I bought it from). They replaced the frame and said they replaced the barrel also. Looks good now. I paid the ffl fee at the dealer and s&w said they will reimburse me back. The dealer gave me a new box of ammo just in case s&w doesn"t repay me. But I know they will. This dealer gave me a box of ammo for no reason, and the dealer I bought the gun from didn't even care about my canted barrel!! He won't be getting anymore of my business! And a bad word of mouth.

The QA is creating jobs for CS over at S&W.
I'm glad you got it back as new - and a box of ammo as well.

Happy you got it back a.ok. I just got my first revovler from an online auction and had been nervous as all get out over the barrel being canted. Not to worry my 686 6" talo arrived w/o any misalignment that I can detect. Being this is my first revolver, I did have a queation about a rattling noise when I skake it L to R. I think it may just be the little lock flag but, not sure. I was suprised by this because after several thousand rounds through my first 1911, I still havent heard a single rattle of any kind.

The rattle is most likely the hammer block that slides in a slot in the side plate. It is not a problem, just means it is working as designed. It prevents the gun from discharging if it is dropped on the hammer hard enough to break the hammer and cause the firing pin to discharge a round.
