new to s&w's and looking for a specific 629
hey all. looking to add a revolver to my collection and am pretty set on a short barreled .44 mag. im a big ruger fan, and i really love the srh alaskan, but i also really like the s&w 629 backpacker. I like the full size grip, short barrel, and full underlug, but im not crazy about the price. if there were other options that met this criteria that i could find used, for 600 or less that would be great. i am hoping that some of you more experienced s&w guys could inform me of options that meet these specifics - full grip, under 3" barrel, full underlug, and ideally SS although for a really good price I wouldnt be opposed to a blued version. thanks for any help.

It is kind of a unique model and anything similar to it in the S&W line-up could be a little pricey. The best bet for you probably would be to start shopping for the gun locally and bid on any on-line auctions. If you are patient, maybe you will get lucky and find one at your price. Deals are out there, but they are getting harder and harder to find and when/if you do find one at a favorable price, you had better have the money in your pocket.
There was a short run of 3-inch Model 624s (and Model 24s) which are similar guns. They are 44 Specials. If you are a handloader, you might consider one of those, too.

thanks for help, i don't handload yet, but plan to after the new year (tax returns). i am pretty set on a 44 mag, although i was kicking around the idea of a 454 casull, but figure ill wait on that and get the 44 first. there is a gun show near me in the middle of nov. so i figure if i dont find what i want there then ill just bite the bullet and order the backpacker from buds for 800.

Check out the Talo edition 629 3" model.
It's dead sexy.
Here is a great video some guy made
Smith & Wesson 629 Talo - YouTube
I think it sells for 750ish on places like Buds.

My local Gun Shop just got a 3" Talo in today. It is going to get sent back to S&W for a new Front Sight. Looks like they spaced the front sight up off the barrel with a Dime on each end before drilling the Pin Hole.
Forget about the front sight issue for a minute. Everything else looks really nice.
Great finish.
Fluted Cylinder.
Forged Target Hammer & Trigger
Old Style Barrel with Short Ejector Shroud, not the full underlug.
Red Ramp.
The Grips are Super Rosewood, Checkered, Finger Groove Combats, w/S&W Laser Engraved Logo.
It is one good looking gun for a new one.
I happen to be short a 44 Magnum at this time. That would plug the Non-Existant Hole between my 3" 625-3, and my 2-1/2" 310 Night Guard Nicely. I know that is Lame, but I could not come up with a better reason to buy it on short notice.
