Default 649 CC and Holster Questions

After much research I decided on getting either a 640 or 642 no lock for CC.Yesterday at my LGS they only had a 642 with a lock and were unsure when the no locks could be obtained. Then in the used gun case I saw the most beautiful revolver I had ever seen[at least on this visit]It was a 649 No Dash. The salesman looked the date up as from 1987.Great shape not a scratch on it.I'd post a picture but I'm somewhat technologically impaired[probably why I'm a revolver guy]Even with the original grips it felt great in my hand and I really liked the shrouded hammer so you could fire it single action.Of course I bought figuring I'd research it later.Questions 1] Wasn't the 649 originally called The Bodyguard and does that year have MIM parts. 2]I would really like to pocket carry as it didn't feel too much heavier then the 642 or 60 in the store.Any holster advice.3]What's the benefit of a pocket holster with rounded or square edges.4] Any other holster carry advice if I decide to carry IWB or OWB.I never carried before but the thought of an IWB holster sound uncomfortable,am I wrong?5] Why isn't this gun more popular it's the 1st one I ever saw and it appears to have all the benefits of a 640 with single action capabilities? Thanks you to all who reply!

I am fairly sure that it does not have MiM.

Congratulations on a great gun.

For inside the pocket holsters, I have a High Noon Pocket Grabber

Pocket Grabber

Very nice holster. That flap you see keeps the holster firmly in place.

I am sure others will have their recommendations too.

Everybody's idea of what is too heavy for pocket carry will differ,
mine has the Model 649 right at the top end of my "comfort limit."

Since I have other options, I do tend to go with
either my M38 Airweight or 638-3 for pocket carry.

I have tried carrying my M649-3 but find it just over the weight limit of what I find
comfortable for pocket carry, unless I'm carrying it in the pocket of a heavy jacket or coat.

When it come to square or round cut pocket holsters, it all depends on the bottom contour
of the pocket that you'll be carrying it in. I use both on an equal basis, depending on the pocket.

One last word on the Model 649, one of my favorite S&W's.
The Troopers of The Michigan State Police relied on them as
their back-up guns (BUGS) for many years, some still do.
The MSP duty pants have a special holster pocket sewn
inside the regular pocket(s) for BUG duty........

P.S.
For the record, the MIM parts arrived on the scene around 1996-97.

During the summer months since I usually wear a tanktop or no shirt at all I mostly pocket carry. When the weather cools a little I carry owb with a cover garment at the 3:30 position. I tried iwb but just couldn't get comfortable with it. Maybe a sturdier belt and/or a different holster design would help. Since I make my own holsters I can't really recommend a brand.
This is a pic of my 442, a pocket holster, owb holster and a wet molded ammo pouch. I don't usually use the ammo pouch choosing to just slip the speed strips in a pocket instead.

I have a 649-3, and it fits like a glove, in a Tagua belt holster. I got it for $24.99 at Natchez Shooter Supply. The quality is top notch. The leather is twice as thick as a comparable DeSantis holster, which costs more than twice as much.
