School Me: 6" .38/.357's with Adjustable Sights
Now that I have a 686 with an Ultradot, I'm considering another S&W with adjustable sights for silhouette matches at 50yds.
Apart from a 586, what other S&W in .38 Special should I be looking for that's less expensive than a 686/586?
I just don't have another $500-$700 in my current budget for a centerfire silhouette match shooter.
What else would work?

Well you might find a M14 for less than $500 but probably not by much if it's nice.

I have a 6" shooter grade Model 19 that shoots better than most of the .357s I've owned (one old 7 1/2" barrel Colt SAA excepted). They're less expensive in this area than 686s and 27s and I prefer'em.

You could also look for a Model 66 or 19, the 6" guns seem to sell for less than the shorter barreled guns. A 6" 27 or 28 would work also but will be a tough find within your budget. John

K-38 is correct.
Like the others have said, you could also look for a M19, M66, M27 and M28. Those would all shoot 38s and 357s.

Thanks, gents
I'm on the hunt for a 6" .38 I can shoot silhouette matches in the iron sights class.
The 686 already has me spoiled rotten. :O

I would save up and buy one of the 586/686's with the adjustable front sight, just set up for silhouette matches. Then set the sight for 25/50/100 whatever , no holdover.
The price jumps around sometimes they are cheaper than a regular model, cause not many people want them , and sometimes sellers add the "RARE" factor, though they are not that hard to find. Good luck, Bob

And you're rubbing in this salt WHY?
Point me to another one of those!
And the idea is to stay with the same caliber as the 686 so I can reload for both.

Price? You wanna great deal? Time travel yourself back to 2003... and peruse the Waco, TX closeout/mail order store's sale flyer to find brand new 6" 66-6 for $350 + $10 s/h to your ffl. They even included a scope rail! Great deal - mine was my first .357M. I added a HiViz front sight and some Ahrends square conversion grips in cocobolo the night it came home:
Great handfit and balance. Seriously, look around for a good used 6" 66 - or it's blued steel counterpart, a 19. You likely won't find a shooter for $350 now, of course.

Doc, I know where a shooter grade 14-3 is around here for around $400ish - well it was there a week or so ago and had been sitting there for months. pm me and I'll tell you where it is - it's an FFL and I'm pretty sure they'll ship.

Now you'll just have to find a load it likes at 50 yards. Easier than finding a happy 100 yard load...

One more suggestion
Bought a "Classic" 45 colt last summer. Even with all the "changes" from the old model 25's it consistently shoots Nozler 250 HP's into (large) one hole groups at 25 yds. Yes, I had to scope it for that to happen. Old age and all...
Just bought a 686-8 6" silhouette, with adjustable front sight, off GB for a tad more than $500 last week. Beeutiful! Now all I need are some factory smooth combat grips for it!
There ya go, ya pays yer money and takes yer chances...
