Default Let's see your Garage Gun

You here a lot about truck or trunk guns, but what about you garage gun?

I keep this 360 (Buds .38 Spl. version) in an old socket set box stashed in the Garage. I'll wear it when I'm doing yard work or in the Garage. It only weights 13.3 oz., so I don't even know it's there. The Hogue grip fills my big paws pretty well, but is still thin and lightweight. It seems like a lot of things happen when your in your front yard minding your own business (stray dog, coyote, scum bag, Door to Door salesmen etc.). Just turn on the news to see all the neighborhood violence that goes on.

Obviously, where you live will dictate what you need.

Let's see your Garage gun.

I'll bet you the Connecticut doctor who was tied up in his basement while his wife and two daughters were being raped and burned alive wishes he had a gargae gun. He freed himself and ran next door to get help.

I don't think of myself as a paranoid person. That said, I do think that society in general is becoming more violent for a variety of reasons. Self protection and that of my family become a top priority. That means increased situational awareness, carrying concealed in areas that I considered safe, avoiding questionable areas and adding an alarm system to the home.
The doctor in Connecticut and his family lived in a "safe" area and personal security was an after thought considering where they lived. Tragically, this incident proved the old adage - nowhere is completely safe. Had the doctors' home had an alarm system - it could have possibly saved them but we will never know. I do know based on a number of recent tragic events I carry concealed everywhere. Ironically, the perps in the Connecticut case said they didn't have any reason to kill them - they just did.

Sorry guys. Crime is everywhere. Why even CCW if you're only going to be in a "safe neighborhood".

You also see on the news about dogs & wild animals attacking people. A couple of years ago, someone local to me had a mountain lion hanging out in his back yard that he had to put down. And about a month ago, a coyote tried to swoop-up a local mans dog. It came all the way up to his front door. My nextdoor neighbor saw a large bobcat hanging around the park that's next to his house.

You never know when trouble will come your way. I find it best to be prepared.

I don't have a "garage gun," but won't criticize anyone who does. I live in one of those nice, "safe" neighborhoods. A year ago, a drug addict kicked in my front door, in broad daylight in the middle of a weekday, and stole all of my wife's jewelry right off of our dresser. He is 6'5", 250 lbs., and was out on bail for 11 prior counts of aggravated burglary. If I had been home, I sure would have wanted to have a gun handy.

One of these days he will kick in the wrong door and that will be that...

I don't have a "garage gun" per se, just what ever I happen to be wearing at the time. I do have a few tools and some primitive battle weapons, (it was a weird phase I went through a few years back) that make dandy crushing and cutting tools if the need arises. They include 2 tomahawks, 2 machetes, a mace, battle axe, morning star, war hammer, ice axe, ball bats, tire irons, chainsaw, axes, hatchets, shovels, and hammers.

I live in a rather remote area, where the sheriff is at least 30 minutes away. I've had run-ins with trespassers on 4 wheelers, bears, crazy dogs and a rabid fox. I'm always armed. My garage gun is an SKS. As a suggestion from experience, don't forget maintenance on your garage gun. A few years ago, I found a dirt-dauber's nest in the barrel of my SKS.

And leaving a gun in the garage (unsecured) isnt the smartest thing to do. At least at my house, the garage is about the easiest part to break into. Someone breaking in there, going through droors and finding a gun is a great thing.

I guess some of you are pretty paranoid if you are out working in the garage with a gun in an IWB or live in pretty bad areas.

I live out in the sticks in western Washington, in a nice, safe rural area. A couple years ago, a man & his wife were murdered in their home about 4 miles from here and their house was burned down around them afterwards. The murderer was caught-- a security camera filmed him using their bank card in an ATM machine about 10 minutes after the murder, about 6 miles from the scene of the crime. A local scumbag, well-known to the police. He was convicted but is currently appealing the conviction due to some irregularites on the part of the cops & the prosecutor.
Would having a gun handy have saved the life of the victims? I don't know, but it sure wouldn't have hurt their chances any. That was about when I started carryng every day.

I have a carry permit and my Sig P228 would be my garage gun because when I'm out there it's in my shoulder holster.

I don't have a garage but in the barn I keep a single shot 12 ga handy in a kind of hidden spot. Really good for destructive critters needing population control. I guess it would beat a sharp stick for defense too.

"I don't even have a garage. You can call home and ask my wife..."
Uneasy Rider, Charlie Daniels.

But my S&W M38 is usually on my person when I am awake.
It's in a pocket as I type this.

Not everyone has a simple roll up door or sears purchased opener. Some garages are as secure as the home.

Bad guys all have vehicles these days, and go wherever they want. They don't spend much time in their own crummy neighborhoods, they come to the better ones because the pickings are so much better. I'd rather have a gun in the same place all the time than have to remember where I put it, or go get it from somewhere else. If I only have a second or two to react to a threat (which is all most people get) I want to be drawing and snicking off the safety, not wondering where the nearest weapon is!

There is no peace in Condition White............but I can stay in Condition Yellow indefinitely.

What about "your bathroom gun"?
I have a 3913 double freezer bagged in the toilet tank...

I suppose ones outlook on degree of preparedness is determined by past experience.

If where you live is completely safe you wouldn't need a local law enforcement agency. In 71 years I have never lived in a "safe" place. Larry

Same here - a J frame in a pocket holster. It seems perfectly normal to me.

I like to have my SP101 on my hip at all times. Most of the time around the house & yard, I'm carrying.

Paranoid? I think not. In my area, the chance of a scumbag attack may be lower than some other places, but if a scumbag ever does decide to come to my house and attempt to victimize myself or my family, I don't intend to stand idly by or to appeal to his humanity and ask him to please just leave us alone.

Also, a much more likely scenario where I live is the nearby presence of confirmed rabid animals, with locally documented attacks and/or attempted attacks on people by rabid animals. I have two children to look out for - children that are not "plugged in" to all of this modern techno-junk - they like to play outdoors. If my kids (or myself or my wife) are in the yard, and a rabid animal happens along...

Call me "paranoid" if you want, but with the very real threat of either scumbags or rabid animals, I fully intend to be able to deal with the situation should an attack ever occur.

I also carry at home. Have a M642 in my pocket at all times. A Shield in my bedroom and LCR 22 in the TV room. No CCW allowed in Illinois BUT there are legal ways around that when away from the home. I have my firearm in my vehicle (in a zipper case or center console) when I'm out with a full mag by its side. Best we can legally do in Illinois.

I also live in a very safe area but over the last year or so the scum on the west side are starting to break into homes in my area...even when people are home. Folks leave there garage doors open(fools) and the scum walk right in the house.

I take no chances with my family and will have a firearm at my side at ALL times ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE I go...even in Illinois. We have little to no police presence in my area and I will not rely on them for protection...besides its not there job...it's mine. I have a Florida CCW so when not in the Communist Republic of Illinois I conceal carry.

It is in a wall safe just inside the pedestrian door. Happy?

It is nice that many of you are snug as a bug in a rug in your well protected, gated communities with public safety response times measured in tenths of seconds. Not all of us do. The average lot size in this subdivision is 3 acres, there are no gates to keep the city folks from using us as a dumping ground for their unwanted pets (as a side note, prior to the big wildfire last year I was feeding over thirty cats courtesy of said city folks) and public safety response times are measured in days. The criminal class know this. They also see easy pickings because we are spread out and separated by thick vegetation, or were before the fire, in addition to the lack of public safety patrols.

When the starving pit bull you didn't want or couldn't handle so you dumped in my neck of the woods is trying to get over the fence to make a meal out of the wife's Scotty I don't have time to run to the gun safe, work the combination, pick a gun, find and load the ammo, and run back to the yard.

For you to cry paranoid or what not without knowing the facts and make some foolish statement like "If my neighborhood was so dangerous I had to carry in my own house I would just move" is disrespectful and living in a fantasy world.

Amen

They also don't understand the safe areas or low crime areas aren't patrolled as much...and the scum know it. The safe areas become intermittent targets of home invasions and various crimes/vandalism...easy pickins. In my area, even if we have suspicious activity the cops are slow to respond if they respond at all...and the scum know it.

My garage gun is a S&W 910, I don't have any other use for it and I haven't shot it in years but at least its able to play a role around here.

I forgot to add, I live an safe town of about 75,000. I think there are 2-3 homicides a year. There was a home invasion robbery about 1.5 miles up the street a few weeks ago, they stole, cash a couple of guns and some drugs. One of the residents/victims was promptly arrested for multiple parole violations, go figure.

I have carried for many , many years. Twice have had to use it. Both times in high class places. "If I knew where I was going to find trouble, I wouldn't go there." I carry all the time, period.

Regards

Bill

Jeez, I just learned an awful lot of stuff that I hope I'll never need, but now that I think about it, I sure am glad I did. Thanks for all the viewpoints fellas.

I have been in LE almost 29 years. I was raised on a dairy where we ran into all types of situations where you needed to defend yourself or your livestock. Either from a pack of stray dogs to a rabid skunk to a prowling burglar. Which is no different than the former. I am nearing 60 and can say that my opinion is based on experience. If you are not prepared for an emergency then it is too late to do so during the event. And yes I carry daily and am right now. Not openly as I like the element of surprise. And not to impress anyone but to protect myself and my family as is my right and responsibility.

I have my Shield attached to my tool box on old magnet, right to the side of the box, ready to rock in roll.

Good old fashioned 870. Hangs up over the garage door and can get to it up or down.

Unless you own a crystal ball and know what the future has in store for you, you probably don't need to pack protection. Had I been fortunate enough to gaze into my crystal ball on 3-11-12, I would have seen the pit bull waiting for me and my dogs while out on a routine, every day walk. AND, I would have had my 38 special w/hollow points waiting for the pit bull and ALSO, would have saved the $2500 in vet bills having the beagle sewed up. So saying you live in a "safe world" and don't need a garage gun or to have a weapon handy ready for the home invasion, you MUST have one of those crystal balls!!! Sure would love to borrow it!

Trust everybody but cut the cards.
People with desire for money and not work don't rob in their neighborhood because no one has any money---they go to nice safe neigborhoods where people don't lock their cars and have money and jewlery.
One said when asked why he robbed banks "That's where the money is!"
I have 3 in differnt locations in the house---within steps of getting to. I don't want to have to run across the house--get into my guns--find ammo-load and go looking for the guy in my house.
I raised my kids the way I was raised--every gun is loaded--you want to look at it, just ask me. Take them to the range or the farm and let them have their curosities satisfied---teach them.
I have had it up to my ears with folks who think kids learn by osmosis.
Blessings

I am reminded of the man who heard the statistic that most auto accidents occur within twenty five miles of your home....so he moved.

I've got a S&W mod 65 4" in my back garage and a S&W M&P 9c in my front garage. Neither garage is attached to my house and both are more secure than average. My S&W 337 is in my pocket right now. And I am a little paranoid but I'm not moving.

But if I lived in a super safe state like Florida, where there are never any weirdos, I'd just bebop about with my big boy voice to protect me.

Sorry guys, I refuse to buy into the paranoia exhibited here by a lot of you. To walk around the house with a gun always on your hip, I am going to call it paranoid. Unless you live in one of the worst parts of Detroit or something.

Do I have plenty of guns around? Yes. For instance, I have one in my living room when watching TV, on the nightstand, in other places, and a shotgun nearby too. But when I get up to go to the bathroom or grab a beer out of the fridge, do I take it with me? No... sorry, no. If multiple intruders happen to knock in the door while I am up taking a leak and kill me, I guess it was just my time. But I refuse to be a prisoner in my own home, and feeling like I need, or should carry around a gun on my person 24 hours a day in my own home would give me just that feeling.

And for the record, no I dont live in a gated community, but I do live in a neighborhood with low crime.
