17-4 with Red Ramp and White Outline Sights
I have a 17-4 8 3/8 with 3 T's and red ramp/white outline sights. The SCSW makes no mention of red ramp/white outline sights in any of the listed product codes for the model 17's, so would I be correct in assuming this was a custom ordered gun? How unusual are model 17's with the red ramp/white outline sights. Thanks.

So, do you have an opinion or any information about that particular configuration? Any input would be appreciated.

RR/WO was certainly not the standard setup for 17-4s.
Black "target" sights with a patridge fronr were issued.
When I purchased this one new back in the day, the dealer installed the "3Ts" from his supply of new parts.
Changing rear sight blades is a simple operation.
As for the front sight, the parts list that came with the gun does not call out the sight as a separate item.
That leaves two possibilities.
1) The gun was delivered with this sight configuration. A $50 letter will settle that issue.
or,
2) The sights were swapped at some point. Examining mine closely, it is not obvious how the blade is attached. Almost looks as if it might have been soldered on as there is a tiny bit of the milled in ribbing peeking out at the bottom front of the sight base.

In my experience, it is VERY unusual to see such a Model 17.
Without seeing the sights in detail so we could speculate about installation, it would be tough to say how the gun came to be. It's definitely not a standard configuration and might or might not be factory work. For what its worth, I think it more likely it is not factory work, but you never know...

I have 2 model 17-4's and each one has different grips and sights. One is just like the one described in the OP but with a 6 inch barrel.

Thanks for the responses. With a strong magnifying glass I can BARELY see the front sight pin on each side of the barrel rib. The entire front sight looks very clean. I think I'm just going to enjoy this one and not worry about it..

I have a 27-2 at S&W having a RR insert installed. It should be back next week, as it has been there since September 24th. Point being, without lettering a gun there is no dependable opinion as to whether any gun came with anything that is considered an accessory. A couple of months ago the 27 had regular sights, next month it will have factory RR/WO sights. You just never know without everything else to back it up, box/case, original bill of sale, etc.
