Probably worth less than you are hoping for.

8 3/8" are hard to sell. A 6", even though much more common,
will usually bring more money. 657s are hard for shops to sell.
Here on the Forum, you have a much better chance.

I have 2 57s and a 657 in 8 3/8" but I am a 41 enthusiast

The 657 was bought at a gun show several years back with a
2x Leopold scope and a leather shoulder holster. Fellow was
asking $800, I offered $550 and walked out with it.

My LGS had a blue 57 in the case for about 6 months this year.
Asking $700. Super clean, barely a turn ring. Since I had one,
unless it was very reasonable, there was no need to buy it. I
walked out with it a couple of months ago for $475. Made the
offer every time I went in the shop and finally they took it.

The SCSW, p. 268, writes 657s were introduced in 1986 with three barrel lengths, 4”, 6”, and 8 3/8”, and that while the 4” was discontinued in 1988, the 8 3/8” wasn’t discontinued until 1993. There have also been batches of 8 3/8” PC 657s.

It appears to me that newer members to the handgun shooting sports don’t appreciate how may long toms were built during the roughly 10 years that long range silhouette was popular. IMO, due to its short production life, increased interest in carrying concealed and short range draw and fire fast matches replacing long range matches, the 4” 657 is the barrel length most likely to fetch a high price.

Not stainless but I just bought a 57 8 3/8" nickle good shape 1980 year gun, a bit of discoloration on the cylinder where someone kept it in a holster, 600$ out the door looks like it's been shot very little.

Performance Center Model 657s are going for around $1200 these days on GunBroker.

I have one in 8 3/8" and I love it. I'd be hard-pressed to let it go for $1200.

Default S&W Model 657 41Mag 8 3/8

Value at $800-$900.

Last month at Gun Show Cheyenne Wyoming Archer Complex
we came across one, personal sale out in the parking lot.

It was a Lew Horton Circa 1990's S&W Model 657 Hand Ejector,
41 Magnum, stainless steel, 8 3/8" Bbl, with the Black Houge grips
meant for Revolver work.

From my observation only factory shot, NRA 100%, with Blue
Plastic Box and Label in excellent condition, brown wrapping
paper, S&W patch, SS Scope Mount, all the paper work.

If it was a 6" barrel and I reloaded for 41Mag, it would have
been mine (especially in the condition of everything looking
brand new in the box).
