Model 14-3 grip/frame, what to get?
I just got a model 14-3 .38 special and Im not a fan of the grip. I want to purchase a nice wood grip but Im not sure what to get, theres all sorts of options like J frame, K & L frame and n frame and I have no idea what grip is on the gun or what will fit it, can someone help me out? Heres a picture of it if that helps.

14-3 is a K-frame. And is a "K-38 Target Masterpiece". Yours appears to be a 6''.
How does it shoot.

K frame, square butt (the bottom of the grip frame flares out; the round butt frame tapers smaller.)

The K and L grip frames have the same dimensions; the L frame overall is larger.

Can I ask what you think it is worth? I saw one which was a Model 14 no dash and was interested if anyone has any recent price information.

You need a grip to fit a square butt K frame.

A model 14 (1957-'59) in similar condition to the gun in the photo would probably be $500 or a little more, depending on your local market.

The grips that are on your gun are Pachmayr Presentation grips (Pachmayr's model name for that grip). As I am sure you know, they are not the original grip, which would have been wood magna style grips, unless it was ordered with wood target grips, but most were delivered with magna grips. As stated before, it is a square butt K frame, so you will be looking for grips to fit that frame. I suggest you try to locate guns at a shop or a range which may have wood grips to try out the way the feel to you, as everybody has slightly different hands and likes. Of course, that may not be practical. I might suggest you contact Herrett's Grips, they will custom make a set of grips to fit your hand from a tracing you can make of your hand. They are not too much more expensive than most other wood grips, and the fit and feel will be superb. Herrett's is one of the oldest grip makers extant, and they do a great job. I don't have their web address handy, but it should come up readily in a Google search.

In my humble opinion, the finest K-frame grips ever made were those made by Smith & Wesson during the late fifties and sixties. You can only find them used, and often, at a good bargain ($40.00 - $65.00). All of my guns have the same grips.
