Old Friends... Good Wood.
Got some range time recently with some of my favorite shooters...
From the left.... Model 58-.44 Magnum conversion, Model 66-2, and a Model 29-3. These guns aren't overly collectible, but they are my favorite field guns.
As you can see I think that my 58-44 is dialed in. Range was 20 paces.
Out of deference to the fixed sights, I had to work with gradually decreasing charges to get the gun to shoot to the point of aim with 242 grain conical from Tennessee Valley Bullets. The final charge weight is 7.8 grains for a chronographed 908 fps. / 442 fpe. This is a mild and accurate load.
Also, the 58-44 has new shoes, courtesy of my pal "Weatherby"...
These are the not commonly encountered N-Modified Magna-Smooth-Goncalo stocks. Thanks Paul!

nice shooting - love that 58 - wood looks good - a 240 at 900, that makes a day at the range pleasurable and will do 99% of what needs doing with handgun - and to think I had a good day at work when nothing went wrong - I'll take your kinda day anytime

Paul,
I really appreciate the trade we made for those stocks. They are perfect on the 58-44. You were kind to offer them to me and I put them to work instead of stashing them in my S&W woodpile.
No, I haven't been down to town to pick up my mail since I got back from hunting in West Virginia... is there a reason I should hurry?

Nice guns and stocks, Drew. S&W should have made the M-58 in .44 Magnum. .45 Colt, too.
You wrote you used 7.8 grains of powder in the load. Was it Unique?

Thanks Jeff. Yes I agree that S&W really missed the boat by not offering the Model 58 in .44 Magnum, .45 Colt, .45 ACP. The latter would have made a fine belt gun for Police service and probably gotten around the recoil issues with the origional .41 Magnum round.
Yep, the powder was Unique. 7.8 grains was just right.

Old Friends... Good Wood.
I'm glad you were talking about nice stocks on some of your favorite handguns. I was getting kinda worried about that invitation to the camp
