686 no dash
I grabbed this excellent condition 686 no dash today. Curious if you guys run across many of the "ND", because I don't find many in my parts.

My first S&W revolver was a 686 6 inch no dash that I later sold to a friend and then it was stolen from him. So I searched and found another just 3 years ago as I had to replace my first S&W revolver.

No, mine hasn't had the firing pin modification done, and I don't think I will send it back. Just keep it as is.

Ed,
Did you have the patridge front sight installed? I have a -3 with an integral red ramp, and I would like to have a patridge. If you had the same and had it changed, I would be interested in what was involved and the cost. Maybe you could pm me.
Andy
P.S. to the rest of you: beautiful guns, and back to the topic. Please pardon this interruption.

I just a got a 586 no dash in this week. Going to shoot for the first time today. No M on this one. Somehow I dont believe a diet of wadcutters is going to mandate sending it back

Snowman,
I bought this 686 used with the Patridge sight. From the photo you can see it is pinned. I have no idea if it came from the factory that way but assume it did. Otherwise the seller would have made a point of it. He didn't.

I picked up a 686 no dash, 6" barrel, NIB from 1984 a couple of years ago. I still haven't shot it. Guess I need to.
By the way those are all good looking guns and good pictures.

Very nice looking pistols. The 686 has been my favorite revolver since it came out.

I'm the origional owner of a ND without the M. No plans to send it off either. That started a love affair with the L frames that I don't seem to be getting over.

They seem to pop up fairly regularly in my neck of the woods. Mine is a police trade-in, so it has some dings and scratches, not sure on dept.

Could you guys enlighten me as to the "M" stamp and the mod required? In the vague recesses of mind mind I remember something about the firing pin but can't put my finger on the details.

Apparently, the primer could flow back into the firing pin hole and inhibit it from firing... or something like that.

Mine came to me in a package deal - A fellow had the Model 686 and a Model 19-4. Got both for a total of $850.

686 no dash and 586 no dash WOW
ME TOO. Just last weekend I was fortunate to find this 586 (no dash) 6" at a local gun show. Goncalo Alves "cut out" furniture and the rarer 4 position click adjustable FRONT sight. He wanted $600, settled @ $525 out the door in nearly new condition, matching box and all the goodies. Not a steal, but a good number. SWEET wheel gun, and a good companion to my March 2012 manufacture 686-6+.
No "M" mark on mine either and I don't intend to send it in for the fix. I thought I preferred a 4" barrel like my 686+, but this 6" is really growing on me. OK . . . no vulgar comments guys! ; - )

My 586 6" came from the factory with a Patridge sight, that is integral with the frame. It is a AAA serial number so early production. I have seen some other Patridge 686's, but they all have pinned front sights that I believe are factory from the contour of the sight and the fact that replacement Patridge sights can be purchased that fit. Most, however, have the orange insert ramp sights.
