I'd planned to pick up a used Security Six or GP100 today (can the word Ruger be mentioned here?) and walked out with a 686. It wasn't a blind buy as I'd researched much so knew a 686 was well regarded.
To start this adventure, can someone help me determine the date of manufacture for this puppy? Serial AAL17xx?
you can mention ruger but not "taurus"....just kidding. you got a very fine hand gun that will give you a life time of enjoyment. you know you can never have just one, once bitten it's a hard habit to break.
Congratulations. My first hand gun was a 686 from the same era, an early no-dash, but I bought mine in the 1980s. I've put many rounds through it...for years it was the only handgun I owned and I discovered I really liked indoor pistol shooting and back then all the indoor ranges sold their own reloads for a couple of dollars a box. My collection has grown considerably, but I still enjoy shooting the 686 frequently and as much as any of the others. And, as an aside, I never sent it back for the recall modification and never had any trouble with the cylinder locking up. So enjoy it!
Thanks guys! I always enjoy the learning curve and am officially into the 686 vortex with both feet.
I've been reading through the FAQ's and several other threads. Any typical concerns to be aware of with this vintage 686? I'm aware of the firing pin/primer recall but should be good as mine is stamped with an "M"
