Good retention holster for Model 649
I am looking for a good retention hip holster for my 649. I bought one but even though it was supposed to fit that model the gun can slide out under the thumb break. I am looking for something when I go fishing or hiking and I want the gun to stay put. I prefer leather but I am willing to think outside the box on this.

I can see where the strap could slip over the hump back of a M649. You might try one that the strap catches the rear of the trigger guard or maybe some kind of flap holster. Someone had some pics of some old holsters that had a kind of half flap so the grips were not covered. I thought they were pretty cool.

You might have to go the custom route to get the ideal holster for you. I make my own holsters and I've found that I like molded in retention. I've made custom flap holsters and while they retain and protect the gun, they're not very easy to draw from quickly.
I have a holster with molded in retention that's looking for a good home, it's $45 including shipping to the contiguous states. If I wasn't going to spend the next week in the hospital I'd offer to stitch you up a custom flap holster for the same price.

My son-n-law has a Fobus for his 642 and the gun "snaps" into position. I am not a big fan of these, but it definitely holds the gun in place. I have been looking for one I could use for my 640 and 649. Think I'll look into a Fobus and/or Kydex. They may not offer one for the 1-7/8 inch barrels without the underlug, but I plan to look anyway.

i use an old style "brauer brothers" brand holster with my model 649. the retension strap goes over the trigger guard and keeps the revolver secure.
it has a open muzzle.
brauer brothers holster model ....H 40.
"hunter" holster model 1100-6 is similiar to the brauer model H 40, with a closed muzzle
