Default 45 acp revolvers

I'm looking for a .45 acp revolver, because I heard they are the bees knees. I noticed that S&W doesn't have any "production" level 625's on their website. It's either the thunder ranch, Jerry Miculek, or Performance Center version. Why is this? Does this mean that they are moving away from the 625, and it will eventually be phased out? Or something else?

I've got a 625PC. It is very accurate and I enjoy shooting it. I let me Dad shoot it last time we were out and he especially liked the round butt grip and also couldn't believe how accurate it shot.

The 325NG is a great choice. I have one and just love it. I put different grips on it because I didn't care much for the rubber grips on it. I went with Hogue Goncalo Alves. They fit my hand better and look alot better.

Well my snub 653-3 is a 3 inch one.

If I didn't pack Glocks this would be the one. A true Combat Magnum (I say that cause it eats .45 Supers and I could rechamber to .460 Roland.)

IMO the 625 JM is the production version. Yeah, it is part of the Pro series but I don't see any premium price attached to that designation. Fact is that the 625 JM I purchased in 2011 only cost me 50 dollars more than the "production" model 610 I purchased in 2009. Granted, neither one was cheap but I think I got an excellent value for what I spent.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I want all 3, times to start saving lol.

Thunder Ranch for CC in winter, 625 JM for SHTF/beater gun, and 625 PC for gun games.

Whats a good source for moon clips?

I read somewhere about a place that sells 80/$100, cant remember it though.

Another model to take a look at is the Model 25. It's a N frame and the line seems to me to be above average in the blueing and grips.

Default .45 revolvers

The .45 ACP revolver is great. I love and carried wheel guns for years and the .45 to me is the perfect round. I think the reason S&W offers fewer options in this model/calibre is the smaller demand for wheel guns in general and the >45 acp is generally a competition gun. In IPSC and Combat Shooting you need .45 to be in major classification. It never really stuck with citizens because of the moon clip use. For competition its faster than speed loaders. If you search you can find older models fairly cheap and rebarrel and make it custom to you.

Get a TR 325. Then save up for an original 1917.

If you want a piece of history, and a great shooter, the model 1917 is a great choice. Really fun to shoot, and built like a fine watch. Good luck.

Thumbs up

I have, and shoot, the JM 625. Very accurate, manageable and fun to shoot. The moon clips are all over the internet, just search and find the least costly. One item I recommend is the BMT Mooner. It makes loading and unloading moon clips a snap, and it prevents bending them.

.45 ACP revolvers are fine guns. I have both Colt and S&W 1917s, and a 625-3 like the one above. I just looked at a 625-2 at my LGS two hours ago, but decided it wasn't for me. If it had been a Pre-26 or Pre-25, it would be on the table in front of me now.

I use the nylon RIMZ moonclips. My aged fingertips love them.

Hi,

I've owned pre-MIM 625s and they are great revolvers. My FAVORITE though, and only .45ACP revolver I thus currently own, started out in 1980 as the 6 1/2" Model 25-2 target revolver in blue.

Then, it got the modification that S&W failed to do at the factory . . . reducing the barrel length to a fast-handling 3 1/4." LOTS of converted 25-2s were custom-made back in that day too!

Mine also has the slickest custom trigger job you'll even encounter, both in single action and double action modes, and the super-wide and grooved target hammer was radically narrowed, rounded and smoothed for fast, double action work (both for matches and for self defense).

The front sight (which looks sort of like a Patridge) is squared and filed SHARP on its edges . . . perfect for self-defense in a darkened home if an intruder made the mistake of grabbing the barrel, for it will draw lots of blood fast if someone grabbed it.

Yep . . . look for a Jovino custom 25-2 or other custom chopped 25-2 and I'll bet you'd love the .45ACP revolver. I'll never sell mine, that's for sure . . . IMHO the ULTIMATE fighting revolver! Mine was converted in the very early '80s by a long deceased Savannah gunsmith. I'll never know who though.

PS: I added the funky, MIM-type late cylinder release button. I'm left-handed and this type cylinder release is smoother and faster for a lefty in competition. I can reload this moon-clipped revolver just as fast as I can my competition 1911s . . . and shoot it faster and better too! When shooting in competition, I temporarily replace the elk horn stags + Tyler T-grip with Hogue rubbers.

PPS: Just as cool, the barrel length and profile is a lot like the gorgeous profile of a 3 1/2" barreled Model 27-2, like this one that I own. They make quite a pair, IMHO . . . but my favorite revolver of all time is that chopped barrel 25-2! What a shooter it is!!!!!!!

Gun stores near me carry them, but then the distributor is here in Orange County.

Google for RIMZ Beckham Product Design. You can order them directly.

Caution: not cheap, compared to the metal variety. But if you need only a dozen or two the bite isn't too bad.
