Default S&W Model 10 Info & Photo Safari

Inspired by the Model 10 post, I would like anyone who wishes to show their favorite Model 10 or version of the Model 10 and why it is their favorite. The Model 10 is on my acquisition list (admittedly due to price). All Model 10 stories are most welcome and any pictures are also most welcome. There is bound to be various Model 10 rarities and firearms that we would not otherwise see. As always, thanks for your appreciated wisdom, sarcasm and wit in advance.

Here's a 10-5 snubby, made in 1966, that I bought on GB about four years ago. It's a shooter; the frame is missing some of its finish in front of the cylinder. If it has a story, it's kept it to itself.

This is my only Model 10.

Currently I have two model 10's. I like both of them because they are such accurate shooters.

1983 Model 10-7

and a 1981 10-8 HB (my favorite of the two)

Have no documentation but believe the 10-8 was re-imported from Australia. It is a pure tack driver. Action is second only to my K-38 Target Masterpiece.

My 1950 M&P

There is just something about S&W's from the 1950's. Every one I have handled has that bank vault door solidity to them. That and the utilitarian blue they used on the M&P's just really talks to me.

Ok, Rick, I'll bite. First of all, this photo is just a place holder until I can find or take a better one. This 2" Model 10-7, used to be mine (well, technically it still is), but my better half appropriated it several years ago. You guys know that I have a lot of guns, especially hand guns, but of all of those, this is the one that she likes the best, and that she shoots the best, and that she is confident in. Especially after her adventure last year.

Sorry about cell phone pic, will find a better one soon....

I'll try to make this story short, but I was at work, and a crackhead-methhead tried to break in to our house. She was home alone, and heard him loudly knocking on the window, then the door, and when she didn't answer, he started to pry the door open with a jimmy. She was right inside waiting with the gun, and announced that if he came through the door, she would shoot him. He ran to his car and took off.

Well, she didn't have to fire a shot, and all ended well. He had broken into many homes in the rural neighborhood, and had stolen thousands of dollars worth of stuff to sell to finance his drug habit. He was arrested later on an unrelated charge, and when the deputies searched his house, a lot of our neighbors property was recovered. He is still being adjudicated on multiple charges from at least three counties, and is facing many years incarceration.

Anyway, I will probably never get the gun back, since it now has sentimental value for her. And that's ok. It did its job, and she has confidence in it, and prefers it for shooting, because of its weight, it is easier for her to control.

Best Regards, Les

I have a pile of M10's. Just the snubs alone number a half dozen. This one is probably my favorite because, first of all, it is nickel. Secondly, it is one of the really early heavy barrel models made in 1964. Finally, it's a lot like the one I got from my friend's father when I was in high school. I kept it all through college. Mine was nickel but did not have the heavy barrel. Back in the day, 14 year olds carried guns. Spending those years in the South Georgia swamps, I most always had a pistol on my belt. We carried them because we needed them and used them daily. Uncountable poisonous snakes and even some alligators were always coming up on us (or we were coming up on them). Then there were the wild dogs and wild pigs. At meal times at my friend's houses, the mother would always say, "No guns at the table. Put them on top of the fridge". It's funny today, how many people have guns, but don't know how to shoot them and have never killed anything. The pistol I carried was a tool. I don't even know how many critters I killed while in high school. Many hundreds at least.

1969 Model 10-6.

A friend of mine, retired LEO, carried one just like it in the 70s-80s and still swears a Model 10 with target stocks was the best service gun he every carried.

I can't say that I disagree. I goes where I point it and it shoots like a dream

This is my model 10-6. It is my favorite model 10 because it is the only one that I still own.

I like M&P's ...

AND the Model 10 ...

Both used to be the cheap Smith to buy.

Not now!

So maybe that is where the term "cold steel" originated?

I bought this Model 10-5 about a year ago for $200.00. As usual for me, it was another "rescue" in need of some TLC.

Worn out rubber grips, light surface rust on parts of the frame and barrel. The worst problem was not discovered until I got it home. The cylinder was capable of being spun backwards with little effort.

Light cleaning with oiled, 0000 steel wool, a set of (old) target grips ($35.00 eBay) and replaced the cylinder stop ($15.00).

Total investment $250.00 for a 10-5 with a smooth as silk action and rock solid lock-up that shoots POA. My only Model 10, but very pleased with overall feel, balance and accuracy.

How about the first predecessor, Model of 1899. 4 digit number, dates to Jan. 1901, and still all original.

They are a little different on the inside.

I recall the first Model 10 I owned - a heavy barrel version that I scorned because I wanted one with the original barrel profile but could not find one in proper condition. I got impatient and bought the heavy barrel gun. I shot it for quite a while before I stumbled along into a pencil barrel gun that was really tidy and purchased it. To make the long story short, I was surprised at the difference in recoil between the two and had to admit that in spite of my earlier preference I found the heavier gun more fun to shoot, and shot it more accurately, too.

If I ever find a nice 3-inch heavy barrel Model 10 I would not hesitate to buy it at any reasonable price.

Like most of you, I have or have had quite a few Model 10s and M&Ps.
Do have a couple favorites, however.

I just noticed that most of these fine revolvers are the pinned pre-1980 variety.

What's the name of the TV show with that girl? Was it set in Victoria? New South Wales also used those guns and they appeared in the Scobie Malone novels by an author whose name I've forgotten. He's a leftie, but wrote pretty good books. Rod Taylor played the character in a couple of movies.

I think you could see those guns on, "Blue Heelers", another Aussie cop show now on YouTube.

Offhand, I think I have seven Model 10s, could be six, could be eight. Most, maybe all of them, are in albums under my name on this Forum. The prettiest is a 2" nickel M10 that's basically new but I have shot it at least once. But this one is my favorite and part of my EDC battery:

I should mention this Model 10 because it is an excellent shooter (I scored 250 out of 250 with it on a concealed handgun test) and because it is somewhat rare, a predecessor to the Model 13 as I recall. .357 Magnum Model 10. My others you can see in my S&W revolver album.

Not all are Model 10's and none after the year 1980.

The top one is a Model 10-6, Police Trade-in from Mobile, AL SWAT. Manufacture date of 1965.

The second down is a Model 10-5 with a manufacture date of 1972.

Third one down is a .38 M&P Model 1905 4th change. Shipped from S&W on Nov. 19, 1929.

Bottom revolver is a Pre-Victory shipped directly from S&W to the Union of South Africa on Dec. 1, 1940.

I purchased all within the last three year. The most I paid was $331.00 for the Model 10-5. The least was $200.00 for the Pre-Victory. So, you can still get a good M&P for well under four hundred bucks.

After I retired in new york and moved to Louisiana I had the occasion to go back to new york for my workmen's comp case. I bummed a copy of my buddy's ffl in case I saw something nice. After doing the comp thing I drove out to my buddies gun shop. I asked if he had any model 10's for sale. Check out the box behind the counter. I had to show my Louisiana CCW license and the clerk told me you could not handle a revolver or piston without showing a CCW permit. he picked up a large brown cardboard box and says take your pick. After about a half hour I found the one I wanted. Take to the front where the boss was and asked how much?. $100 say he. I gave him the money and the ffl and a couple days later came home. Got a call that my gun was in and was there pronto. Did the paper work and the model 10 was in really nice shape. Still have it 20 years later. Frank

You did a great job with her Tony! What a beautiful looking handgun!

I am always torn when I hear a story like this. Certainly I am glad that nobody had to be shot, but it is also somewhat unfortunate that the crack-head meth junkie didn't get what he had coming. I think burglary of residences is one of the worst crimes that can happen. The resulting impact on people's life and well being is horrible and the junkies that perpetrate the crimes don't give a ****. A .380 lobotomy would have cured his disease.

I also posted this guy over in the PPC thread. My first Smith, a most likely older than me 10-7.

- Bull barrel of some sort
- Aristocrat underlug
- Aristocrat sight rail
- Aristocrat (I think) ejector collar
- Action job: trigger pull is about 7.10 DA and 3.5 SA and there's a soft-tipped stop screw in the trigger.

Are those really S&W model 10s, they look like heavier frames? If so, where do I find them?

Well, I agree that he should be punished. And I think he is going to be. He is still facing multiple charges in multiple jurisdictions for not just burglary, but for drug related crimes as well. He had been a suspect before my case occurred, and I am not particularly upset if he is punished for burgling someone else's home instead of mine, especially since he did The gain entry. Since the charges are in multiple jurisdictions, he will probably have consecutive sentences, so he is facing some real time. Also, WV judges are not especially noted for the leniency of their judicial philosophy.

I'm glad that my GF did not have to shoot him though, it would have caused her more soul searching than I would have given.

Best Regards, Les

That's what the gun shop had it as. I think it is a 10 and all the hardware makes it look big.

Fellow Forum Members:

Here are a couple of plain old workhorses. They are not very exotic; 10-8s from 1982. I bought them new to use as training guns. Back when revolvers were the most commonly used handgun. They have served me well over the years. I have had several thousand students since 1977, when I first started as a firearms instructor. When I bought these two guns in 1982, I was still doing mostly revolver training. I have bought 38 spl ammo from the old 3-D company (if I remember the name correctly) shipped in on a pallet. There have been literally 10s of thousands of (mild) loads fired through these guns. They have never been abused, and I think that you could shoot thousands of rounds more through them, and they would just be getting broken in.

They are silky smooth, partly, I suspect from being shot over and over, and dry fired thousands of times as well.

The Model 10 is indeed the "Workhorse" of the line, and I am extremely fond of these two, although, as I said, there is nothing exotic or rare about them.

Best Regards, Les

Late to the show, as usual, but I'll submit the following:

Just a plain, old 4" RB M10-5, but with "U.S." stamped on its baskstrap. SN D154363; I'm guessing mfg'd in 1969 and destined for Vietnam. I was too way back then. Judging from its condition, it's apparent that neither of us made it there. Me, due to a high lottery number and the M10 for reasons unknown. I recently gave it to one of my sons upon his promotion to E7; seemed like the right thing to do with it. I think that he'll get an El Paso tanker holster for it for Christmas this year. -S2

My grandfathers 10-5 5". He purchased it in 1972. I still have the original safety check (registration) card from when he bought it. He was a Detroit Police Reserve and worked side by side with my uncle, a DPD Officer, through the 68 riots and continued into the late 70s. This thing shoots smooth as silk. I know my grandfather did not shoot it much in his later years but it was well cared for. I still have his duty gear too.

Became a Law Enforcement Officer in 1976. We carried nickel 5 inch Model 10's. In 1978 the 5 inch revolvers were replaced with 4" inch nickel Model 10.

Here is my Model 64 (same as Model 10 in stainless) that I purchased in 1976 as an off-duty revolver. Notice the $145 price tag on the box. Also shown is a handcrafted pancake holster made by one of my fellow officers. This is still my favorite revolver and holster!

Not a model 10 but, a M&P with S serial number and 5" barrel from the late 1940s.

And, a true model 10-7 snub nose.
