Great gun. I like having a hammer so my first shot is single action. I reach in the pocket, put my thumb on the hammer and out she comes. The stock triggers make it difficult to hit ANYTHING in double action but the Apex j frame kit corrects that problem. Put a CT laser on and it's one heck of a concealed carry weapon.

Since my very first Smith & Wesson was a Chiefs Special in 1970, I've always been very fond of those J-frames.

S&W Model 637 w/factory rubber stocks.

The same Model 637 w/Magna grips from the S&W Store.

While my revolver is vastly more comfortable to shoot with the rubber stocks, I prefer the Magnas for concealed carry. Years of shooting with Magnas has allowed me to be quite accurate with this handgun.

It is the stainless/Airweight version of the Model 37. What else do you want to know?

Nothing wrong with the shrouded hammer 442/642. If desired, you can always put in an Apex kit like I did which made a huge difference in the pull. I also polished up some spots on the frame, sear and trigger which makes it a lot smoother. I'm currently waiting for some CT 405 grips to show up and it's gtg.

After owning a 638, I've realized that the fuzzies build up something fierce around the hammer when carried in a pocket which is why I went with a 642 this time around.

I have a 637-2 and just watched the Apex videos, looks really easy to install that kit! What/how did you polish the parts? I'd like to do the same when I have mine apart.

Use a hard arkansas stone. Midway has them for about $14 (p/n 537218). I just smooth the rebound slide & adjacent frame surfaces-- it's pretty easy to goof up the hammer & sear engaging surfaces unless you really know what you're doing. Youtube has some how-to videos.

I am buying one of these tomorrow if everything works out with my deal. I look forward to it.
I read an online review and the writer said that the -1 in the model number (637-1) meant it could handle +p ammo??? I thought it was just the -1 first remake of the model 637? Anybody?

Ever look into the 638/438. I think it's the best of both worlds! Shrouded hammer yet still accessible! Kinda ugly but thats what makes them kinda neat! I've got a 438 with an apex kit. Great little pocket revolver!

So my deal went through for my new to me 637-1.

So how old must this thing be to NOT have the lock? No lock is good or bad? I thought all 637's had a lock but I guess not huh!

Looks nice! S&w started putting those locks in around 2001 so it's gotta be made before that. If you provide the first 3 of the serial# we could tell you the year it was made. A lot of people don't like the lock because they feel it ads a bit of complication to such a simply device. There has been stories of the lock engaging while firing but I'm not sure those cases have been proven! I prefer the no lock just because there is no hole in the side!! So long story short, no lock is much more desirable than lock!..ya did good!! Congrats!

I have a 637 w/lock,like the one above(aluminum and stainless).I have been told to avoid a diet of +P's,and generally heavy use of the piece as it tends to make the gun loose.Any validity to this.I have a model 19-5 2/12" which I prefer for everyday carry and use. Thanks in advance.

I have the blued 37-3 version. The 637 finish should wear a little better than mine. I have "chrome" spots from all the holster wear.

You will find it to be a predictably reliable little bugger. I have been tempted on the 442/642 versions, but there is just something about the exposed hammer that I can not part with.

I have carried and shot a 442 for years (usually as backup or a 'grab & go'.) Not too long go my wife talked me into letting her have it for a bedside gun and I have been looking for a replacement. I have a deal working right now for a 37-2. I think it will be nice to have a single action option for my old arthritic hands. I still like the Centennials but the Chief's Special is super too. I put rubber on the 442 but kept the stocks for the 37.

I'm a long time SW fan and have always had excellent luck with their products... except several years ago I bought a 637. It's the ONLY Smith I've ever had bad problems with, guess that's because they all lumped together in this one. The action felt like it was full of sand and on several occasions it would lock up and the cylinder would not release. Several trips back to SW and finally, SW gave me full list credit toward a different model. Their customer service was outstanding. It hasn't soured me on SW; I've bought several since and like their predecessors, they've been fine. Guess this was just a "Monday Morning" piece.
