I gotta hand it to you guys that carry .44 magnums on a daily basis. That's impressive!

Much as I appreciate and respect the caliber, I just can't bring myself to make even my 3" 629 a daily carry handgun for defense use.

I like to keep .44 mags handy when I'm in deeply rural areas, where large game/predators might be encountered, but other than that, my .44 mags are mostly safe queens.

its not to hard to do with the right leather and shirts. I carried a 4" 629 for years, with a wide stiff belt sinched down tight, 40+ ozs did make a long day longer, the first time I handled a 329 it was love at first sight

whats not to like, 26ozs and 44 magnum power in a weather resistant package. If you can put up with the recoil, you might want to try one of these

Hey boys, were still missing a few 629's in this thread, namely a magna classic and I'd like to hear from the folks who have sent one to magna port for some custom work, I know there out there...

I love any thread dedicated to the 44 caliber. I own three 44 caliber guns although one is a lever action rifle. Here is my only Smith, a 629-6 PC, my first revolver. Grips are Ahrends Tactical in Cordia.

I haven't shot this guy as much as I'd like but I will hopefully remedy that soon enough. Plan to use this as my SD hiking/camping gun. Pretty heavy to carry on the waist though. Need to find a good shoulder type holster.

My other 44 is a Ruger Vaquero in 44 SPL. I'll post a pic of it later.

Another great photo, with the right rig (belt, holster and cartridge slide) you can be pretty comfortable, I like the leather from simply rugged, love your cordia stocks they look great, looking forward to your photos

Ill play.....I have two M629's

My M629 Mountain "Revolver" NIB/unfired waiting for a new owner who can appreciate it...

The M629-4 Mountain "Gun" which I got to use as a backup when hunting wild pigs and to be a "camp gun' when camping/backpacking" (original reason I bought the 629-2 above) this gun has been shot and while a bit punishing, its very accurate and nice and lite for extended carry.

I'll have to get out my 629-4 4" magnaported from the factory to show off...bought it around my 21st birthday this year. It wears Hogue rubber grips, but I am thinking about getting some nice wood ones...

Will have to get it out of the safe tomorrow and snap some pics. Great pics so far everyone.

Grip/Stock for 629-3 R/S conversion.

Pachmayr Grip/Stock does not offer a model specific for N frame R/S conversion, only R or S. Does anybody know if either will fit the R/S conv? I am interested in the Gripper Pro model for smaller handed people.

My hand is thick and my fingers short so I'm incline to like the length of the LB design and the backstrap exposed for the short finger thing I got going on and I prefer the combat versions that offer me better stability/control.

I got a Hogue for it and it's awful. The R/L palm-swell size and placement is different and the combat finger groves slant downward from L to R. It feels better left handed and I am not. I couldn't tell you if it was a second or counterfit but for sure it's an awful piece and I need something different.

The origional wood grip is beautiful but my sausage fingers don't wrap around very well so comfort and control is lacking.

I understand the Houge for the 500 is a backstrap covering piece and has Sorbathane in it. How is it for short fingered perple?

Wood is pretty. Rubber seems more functional. Any insight offerings appreciated.

I got the Pachmayr Compac grips for my 629 and while I loved the feel of them, the covered backstrap made the trigger reach too long for my short fingers. I wish they made the Compac Professional grips for the 629 round butt since they do not cover the backstrap. I ended up with a great set of Ahrends Tactical round butt smooth grips and they fit just perfect for me and look amazing to boot. I haven't heard of anyone yet that didn't like Ahrend's grips. See them on my 629 PC in my post above.

Default 629-3

Evolved from .357 owner to a .44. Being a little older and more decrepid a 44 seemed the proper course of action. It's going to get some upgrades from LPA shights, Wolf spring kit and a decent combat grip. The trigger has been rolled and polished for a righty and the grip has been a mis-adventure from the get go.

Presume your gun is a round butt. Agree that the Hogue grip is awful. I've thrown a bunch of them away.

Another possibility for small hands are "Magna" or "Service" stocks. Use as is or add a T-grip.

Here's a pair for N-frame round butt that forum member VM made:

Did you have the gun round butted or is it a factory round butt, pretty sure the rb pacs will fit either way unless it has been k butted, can you post a pic of the grip frame

I haven't done any long shooting sessions with this gun yet but I have not noticed any issues with middle finger knuckle rub. I do know what you are talking about though. I have issues with Glocks in this regard. The Ahrends Tactical grips are nicely rounded in this area and provide a very comfortable grip. Since your 629 has been converted from square to round butt you may need to call Ahrends directly and talk to him about it to see if he has anything that will work for you or if he can make something work for you. I assume he will work with you and get you something that you will be happy with.

No, no it's a round butt with a square conversion. It has a threaded stirrup pinned to the bottom that allows for a longer square butt stock on a round butt frame. It's some kind of better idea brought to you by S&W. It's their world and I'm just passin through.

That stirrup is part of the Hogue. It just snapps off the stud.

ok then, any N-frame round butt stocks will fit, if you cant find something from ahrends or a set of goodyears you like, a bit more money will get you a wood stock made to fit your hand

Sorry, my mistake.

Any round butt grips should work for you. Contact Terry (aka gripseller) on eBay or GunBroker. She sells Ahrends grips at great prices and is very easy to deal with.

Went to that e-bay link and what do I spy?

N frame with round butt conversion..Long handle on a short frame. Do those clam shell AKA non monogrip, jobs have a speedloader cutouts? I can't make it out.

Okay, I'll bite, went out and bought this last weekend so that there'd be one on this thread!
Well, maybe that's not quite true............ I went to pick up a custom 29-2 that I had found on the internet and found that it had issues. It was a 300 mile round trip and I couldn't see coming home empty handed on gun appreciation day. This was in the display case, looks to be pretty much unfired, has a low serial number and it called to me.
I'm a sucker for a pretty gun!

That's the place! The worse thing to ever happen to my bank account was finding their used gun listings online.

Here's a couple more pics.................

The pics don't do it justice, it really is flawless. As far as photography goes I'm quite a hacker!

I did get all the paperwork, the factory target is a 2-3/4" 50 yard group. The box is in pretty good shape, the inside is great, the outside does have a few scuffs but all in all it's pretty good.
It is a low number too, 52. Now if only spring would get here so I can try it out! I used to shoot all winter long but not anymore, I just plain don't like these cold Maine winters.
In about 5 years I'm moving to Arizona, then I'll be able to shoot year round again.

It really is a sweet piece, but the cylinder was binding on the forcing cone on one chamber. It's a shame too because Lou Ciamillo was noted for building top notch PPC guns back in the day. I would like to have it but Lou is not gunsmithing anymore, and I couldn't send it back to the factory for repairs so that means that I would have to find another competent smith that doesn't mind working on another smiths custom gun, then the expense of sending it out.
I could see a couple hundred bucks anyway for repairs times you figured shipping not to mention the hassle of it all.
I thought about seeing if they would knock a couple hundred off and buy it anyway but it's been my experience that they don't negotiate on their prices and I don't need the headache.
I was a little disappointed though when they just stuck it back in the case, even after I pointed out the problem and they did agree that there was a problem.

I have a 4" 629 that was sent of to Hamilton Bowen and is what I carry when I am in bear country. I recently picked up a second 629 with a 6.5" barrel for hunting. It too will be off to see Hamilton Bowen soon. You can never have too many 44 mags.

Just got this one today for trade in services I did for an older gentleman. He's getting me the presentation case this afternoon, as he forgot to include it when we settled up.

Okay, now I gotta throw one in...'specially since it's "new to me".

Bought it earlier last month on my 21st birthday from work. Got a good deal on it, and it's one of my favorite N-Frames (not counting the ones my father gave me). Four inch, magnaported, 629-4. The serial number prefix puts it at Aug. 1994. It compliments my 6 inch 657 41 magnum nicely

Gentlemen,

An outstanding presentation of .44's here. If I may offer my own little contribution, here's a pic of my PC 629...

Default 629-5

This is my only 44 mag. It's a 629-5. Picked it up for $300 just after Christmas. First 44 I ever owned or shot and this gun is more accurate than I expected for a large caliber. This is a group I shot yesterday at 30 yards. I know that's not far but it was an indoor range. Great gun.

That's the deal of a lifetime,
$300.00, you've got to be kidding,
I'd be lucky to find a mossburg pump for that price

My co-worker bought it new in 99. He didn't want it anymore so he sold it to me. All legal including original bill of sale to him from store. I asked him several times if he wanted more but $300 was the price. The trigger was re-worked and it is smooth. I put the Hogue Coco Bolo grips on. The rubber Hogue grip was too small for my hand. Thanks for the compliment guys, only my second time shooting since I got out the Navy back in 78.

Your stocks look great, my -5 has a smooth trigger also, I think all of them came that way, that's some fine shooting for only going twice in the past 35 yrs, hate to see what you'd do all practiced up, what load were you shooting?

Ammo situation what it is, I ordered online for my range ammo. I bought 150 rounds of Ultramax 240 gr jhp, new. I bought that ammo because it was the first ammo that was available in 50 round boxes that was in stock. After I ordered it I read how terrible Ultramax was supposed to be. I must say that I disagree with the bad reviews. Ultramax consistently placed tight groups with the 100 rounds of it I fired. No smoke problem at the indoor range and no blackened hand. I had one box of Federal American Eagle 240 jhp and that ammo was no where near the consistency of the Ultramax. I won't be buying the Federal ammo again. And the 24 rounds of that ammo was shot last so I know it wasn't my shooting. I picked up a couple 20 round boxes locally of Speer 270 gr dcsp and one box of Hornady LEVERevolution FTX because that was all my local store had. Fired off 6 of each and the groups were great. Saving the rest of those.
