629 club
I'd like to start a new thread, one that holds interest for the big bore sixgunner, the 44 magnum is my all time favorite caliber and the 629 is my all time favorite 44, but I do have others and like to read about and look at photos of them as well.
Which 44's do you guys have and use the most?
Which barrel length are your favorites?
Do you have any pet loads that you'd like to share?
Who makes your favorite stocks?
How about the leather gear you use the most.
Do you use your 44's for hunting, target shooting or woods bumming? I'd really like to hear from anyone who carrys a 44 concealed.
And once again I need to apolgize for the nasty cell phone pics. Here are mine from the short to the long
lets see and hear about yours

Not quite as extensive as yours, by I own a Mod. 29-10 6.5", Mod. 629 PC 7.5", and a Mod. 629 PC 2.65". I have to say, I'm rather fond of the .44 myself.

Good thread idea,I have two 44MAGS right now.I have a 6.5" Nickel 29-2 with the presentation case and a 3" 29-4 Lew Horton. My pet load for .44MAG is 24gr's of H110/W296 under a 240gr LSWC keith bullet. This is close to a max load so make sure to start lower and work up to it.When I shoot a .44MAG I want it to be HOT,If I want lower recoil I will just shoot another smaller caliber.
EDIT:My 29-4 is exactly like Superglide's except mine is factory Mag-Na-Ported.

I own a 29-10 6.5" and its an awesome shooter, but I love stainless revolvers. I'm often tempted to try to trade my 29-10 for a 629.

I've owned several over the years but currently only have a 629-3. A real pleasure to shoot. I decided the 6.5" barrel was not to my liking and had my friendly gunsmith chop that puppy down to 4". I like the 629 much more in this configuration.
Stu
and now it looks like this

Whilst I have a brace of Model 29s, there's only a single 629 in the group.
That one is, however, the somewhat uncommon pinned/recessed "no-dash" variant.
It was really showing its age, however, so it took a lot of rubbing to bring it back:
Hoping to find a no-dash 4" to keep it company, but no joy yet.

My first big bore hand gun was a Taurus 44 Mag. 6" barrel with their ported barrel around 1998. Liked the big gun but not the ported barrel.
Traded it in for Ruger Vaqueros 44 mag. and got a Marlin 1894 44 mag., learned to reload and cast my own bullets and still hooked on the 44 calibers. Most recently,I did aquire a few S&W 44 mags.
did slip in a Nickle 29-2

I have a preference to 29's over 629's but here are my 629's.
4" tuned by Andy Cannon.
5" prelock
And for those times when 8-3/8" just won't do.........

Another 5" 629-3 Classic DX. Just for punching nice round holes in paper. I had the red ramp sight on it for the last few years but switched to the gold bead just today:

Well as some of you know I'm a noobie in regards to .44 mags.
Here is a picture of my newly purchased unfired 629-1 .44 magnum 6" and S&W Mdl 15-3 .38spl 4" that I'll be picking-up at my ffl on the 15th.
Looking forward to firing at the range.

DLC’s S&W Mdl 15-3 4inch .38spc & S&W 629-1 6inch .44magnum.

Pardon me while I wipe saliva off my keyboard. My first handgun was a Ruger (stainless) SuperBlackhawk in .44 with a 7.5" barrel. I purchased it after coming home from a trip in the Boundary Waters after a memorable encounter with a camp-wise bear. Took a couple whitetails with the gun. It's a wonderful shooter, if a bit unwieldy. I looked for a sound 5.5" stainless Redhawk for years, and finally stumbled onto one in a friend's shop. It's handier, but if feels like it should have come with wheels. The top gun on my bucket list is a 4" 629- post upgrade. The dreaded IL isn't a deal breaker for me, either. I'm looking for a more packable fishing/hiking gun. Maybe even in Mountain Gun configuration. Sigh!

Both of my 629-6's, the entirety of my 629 collection, normally sport wood grips as they don't normally see 'real' .44 Magnums.
For home defense, I keep GA Arms 200gr Gold Dots in .44 Special in speedloaders for both of them. I also shoot .44 Russian. .44 Special, and .44 Magnum homebrews - very seldom shoot hot loads.

I've had a 629-1 8 3/8" for about 20 years which is one of my favorites for whitetail. Also a 629-4 in 4" that is carried often for CCW, weather permitting.

Here are my three 629s. Left hand side starting at the top 29-3, 629 Classic Hunter, 629 Classic DX, 629 Power Port. Right side .44 specials 624, 624, 696. I have shot the 629 Power Port more than all of the others.
I just picked up this 3" 624 to round out the 624s.

My -4 is used for Bear protection on hunting, fishing and horse packing trips. Unless I'm carrying a rifle, this Classic is either on my hip or by my pillow.
I load hardcast, 285 grain bullets over max charges of H110 for 1235 fps. Very accurate. It's carried in a leather Safariland strong-side holster.
I've had a 29 and two 629s since 1976 ---- they have all served me well.

A little long winded I suppose but here goes.
The top gun I bought new when I was 16 in 1978, originally an 8 3/8" piece. My first handgun, a kid caught up in Dirty Harry, and actually bought at retail which was near impossible to find then in the Bay Area of California due to the DH "craze". Some years later I had the barrel cut to 5". Some years after that (1994?) while cleaning it I noted what looked like a "chunk" of metal missing from the bore about halfway down the barrel. I called the factory and was advised to send it in. A couple of weeks later I received a call from the "assigned technician" advising that, in fact, the barrel was defective. The problem is, his words, the only 5" barrel we have is for the Classic with the interchangeable front sight. Would that be OK? Uh, yep. A few weeks later I received the gun and it was as new, fully re-nickeled, three different front sights and dead tight in every way, at no cost. I remember him explicitly saying that he was fully authorized to determine and agree with the customer the extent of the repair. He seemed excited about the conversion. What service. I assume those days are long gone.
The scond gun was purchased when I was living in Alberta (2004 - 2009) as a beater for $400. The Cokes did it for me. I imported it when I returned to the State's and thought it was the perfect piece to make into a replica of the 500 5" guns made back in '56 (?) or so. I replaced and fitted some of the internals then sent the gun with a Stroh front sight assembly (less grips) to Alan Harton in Houston requesting the 5" cut, mount of the Stroh sight, polish and blue. I sent the grips to a gent here on the forum for restoration. Bingo. Here's the original gun.

CWH4430,
It is pinned and recessed, not a transitional model. I looked for quite a while before I found a 4 inch P&R 629.

Its a beauty, the reason I ask is one the 4"guns in the op is a transitional model, the frame is stamped 6291 its pinned but not recessed, and at one time their was a member here that posted one similar to it, just thought it was you, has I'd like to compare serial numbers, the no dash 4" guns are hard to find, enjoy yours, its a gem

Thanks for the positive remarks! Here's a couple more pics:
It's a PC 629 "Extreme" 12". It's got Bill Wilson sights, I swapped out the original blued sling swivels for the stainless, swapped out a nylon sling for the leather sling, and had Hogue rework a coco bolo stock so I could use the swivels with it. I think that the purpose of the gun was to just get the most out of the .44 mag cartridge as the sights are pretty coarse and blocky, at long ranges the front sight covers quite a bit of the target. For long range shooting I prefer my 10 5/8" 29-3, the sight are a lot finer.
This is a pretty cool gun though, Tackleberry comments are not unusual at the range!
