29-2 Rear Sight Question
Thinking of buying a used 29-2 in good shape. Only thing is, the original owner put a scope on it and no longer has the rear sight. My LGS says he can't get an, "original factory" rear sight for it anymore. My question is: does anyone here have any ideas on how to get a factory sight for this N frame?
Thanks

That sight may fit the 29-2 but it is checkered while the M29 sight has ribs so, it will not be correct.

I wonder if S&W would do it, if I sent it to them?
Thanks

If you are after functionality rather than originality buy one from Bowen and have a local shop drill it to fit your gun.

I really would like to have it back to original. After all, it is Dirty Harry's gun of choice. ;-)

What's the barrel length on the 29-2? The rear sight blade height is different between the lengths, so you'll need to take that into consideration when looking at used parts.
In addition to ebay, also watch Gunbroker for sights and/or "parts kits".

I believe the blades, whatever height needed, can still be bought from S&W, Brownells, etc. The difficulty will be findoing the right sight that matches your hole spacing as it varied on the 29 over the years. This I just experienced hence my Bowen reply...

Bowen makes two style rear sights I believe. A little spendy but very nice. I have them on my Bowen 329. Also a height chart for sights. Check it out. Bowen Arms

So, a sight from a 4" barreled gun wouldn't be "right" on a 6.5" barreled gun?
Thanks,
Tony

The blade would be a different height, but the blades can be changed.
The blades are not expensive, readily available, and not hard to change.

The most important thing buying a used rear sight is that it fits the frame.
The slot changed over the years.
29-2 should have a sight that runs almost the full length of the topstrap and is square (and exposed) on the front.
1000 words . . .

And others can have the hold down hole located differently too, hence the reason Bowen sends his "old style" not drilled.
