Newbie with a question
Hello folks. Just joined up and have a question. I've just bought my first S&W handgun. It is a Model 629 Competitor from the Performance Center. It has a 6" barrel. My question is does anyone know of a good holster for this particular pistol?
It will be used primarily for target shooting and hog hunting. I've talked to Customer Service at Galco and have been told that the barrel width and ramped sight prevent it from working with any of their holsters. Any help is appreciated.

I can't help you with your question, but plenty of experts on this forum will be able to. But welcome from North Dakota.

Galco lists 4 different holsters for your gun in their online catalog. It's a very common gun. I would guess nearly all holster manufacturers make holsters for it. Look at the Galco DAO. When looking at the Galco online catalog select S&W and then look for the various N frame options.

I have looked at the Galco catalog several times and saw the holsters listed for the 629. However, I questioned if the holsters would work with this model. It's the Performance Center 629 Competitor with the weighted barrel. I got in touch with Galco. The person was very helpful and personally owned a similar gun. She actually took the weapon to work to see if these holsters would work. Unfortunately, the answer was no. Again, it was due to the barrel weights and sight ramp. Still looking.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the 629! If you're looking for comfort and quick access, but not necessarily concealment, consider a field holster by the likes of Lobo Gunleather or R. Grizzle. Or maybe a Classic Tom Threepersons holster. In addition, Diamond D makes a very interesting "Guide's Choice" chest rig that would also serve your needs, in particular if you also intend to carry a rifle on your hog-hunting excursions.
Edit: Oops, I just noticed that this thread was resurrected after several years. If asockwell is still on the forum, I'd be curious as to what holster he finally chose.

Wow you picked a very nice gun to start out with ,I have an older 629 have hunted with it for years wearing a chest rig that was built by a local leather guy for me .It wasn't cheap but it has been worn for 25 years and still going stron in some pretty rough field conditions .Today there are several custom holster makers that can fix you right up that's the way I would go .Eother a bandoleer style chest rig or a shoulder rig .Great Gus deserves a great holster .Just google custom holster makers ,good luck and let us know how it works out .

My preference is to order a custom holster just for my gun. There are several members on the Forum that do great work. Check out Lobogunleather.com for one. SimplyRugger.com is another.
