To port or not to port
Ok, just bought a 640 Pro Series and love it. That being said, it's still a bit of a handfull with full .357 loads (Remington 125 grain JSP). I have Hogue "tamer" grips on it and it's really not bad to shoot using BOTH hands. I am a Police Officer and carry this particular gun on my ankle so I can get it with my left hand if needed. I'm right handed. If I should ever need to use this gun in the line of duty, I would probably need to be able to shoot it left handed, with ONE hand. The other hand/arm may be injured, busy keeping my sidearm in its holster, etc. I know this is a very unlikely situation, but prepare for the worst, hope for the best, right?
Ok, now down to the question. Would felt recoil be reduced enough by magnaporting my ankle gun or would I be wasting my money. I do also like to shoot it at the range, it's a fun gun. Just looking for opinions. Thanks in advance.

Why not load it with 38special +P's? I would think out of a short barrel the difference between 357mag vs 38special +P velocity wise would be negligible. The 38special even in a +P round is much easier to handle then a 357 Magnum.
The other thing is can they port that gun with the flutes on the barrel? I am by no means a expert but just looking at that. I would think taking off more metal from the barrel could cause issues.
just my opinon

I have a model 19 that is Mag-Na-Ported but is used for target and hunting. I like it because it does tame the recoil. A lot of the folks on here do not like the porting because of muzzle flash at night or low light situations because it can blind you. Also, some say it is too loud.
This will be a consideration for you as you are LEO, as well it should be.
For me, neither of these are bothersome.

I have done testing on both .357 and 38+p gold dots and .38 was lacking in the penetration department. .357 was great. There is difinately a difference. I will run them over my chrono and let you guys know what the actual difference is, though that will have to wait til this weekend.
Also, I did not even consider the barrel being fluted. Good point. I guess that's something to look at as well.

I would not port a gun being used for that mission. Close and dirty is no place for a ported gun, much less a magnum one.

Infidel,
The Buffalo Bore Standard 38 non +P had close to 20" penetration in gelatin with two layers of fabric. I'm sure the BB +P performs even better. Might want to do some testing with that prior to any porting.

I am not a fan of porting. It will devalue your gun by a $100 per hole generally.

Thanks for the info guys, I will not be porting. I will also try that buffalo bore ammo, have never gave that a try. Thanks for your input. That's why I came here to ask, you're the experts. Much appreciated.

My department doesn't allow ported weapons for the reason that you might have to shoot with the gun in-close to your own body and the hot gas coming out of the ports, not to mention particulates, could be directed into your face. In such a scenario felt recoil will be the least of your issues.

Well, besides lowering the value of your 640, it will blow the cap right off yer head if you do close-quarters shooting. I attempted to do a night-shoot and the blast of the ports blew my cap off and blinded me. I got rid of that revolver. Good move in not porting...........

Have you tried any of the reduced recoil 357 magnum rounds designed for short barrels?
My favorite is the Cor-Bon DPX but I think Federal and CCI/Speer offer similar offerings.

+1 for .38+P. 357 magnum ammo in a lightweight gun with a 2" barrel makes little sense, at least to me. Good luck.

I recently had my .357 Magnum Model 60-9 ported, polished and jeweled by Magnaport, and am very happy with both form and function. The port even on a 1.5" barrel really helps reduce muzzle flip and recoil, in my opinion.

I had a Ruger GP-100 that was magna-ported. It had a long barrel on it, and it was a joy to shoot. I never felt blinded by the ports.
Did make me feel like I was shooting some gun from Logan's Run, though.

I think that you will really like the Buffalo Bore ammo.
I've been relying on it now for about 2 yr's and
just wish I would have tried it sooner.
