Default Aftermarket 586 Sights

So I've got a new-to-me 586-4 4" at Magnaport for action job and some other doodads, and I want to swap the sights. I'm leaning towards a gold-dot front and the Bowen Rough Country adjustable rear, although ideally I would like to have the blade machined to a deep U notch. This will likely be a general purpose pistol for me, and I'd like to shoot some IDPA matches with it too. I probably should go with the fiber optic front, but I can't get past the aesthetics. Anyone have some other suggestions, either for the sights or general tweaks?

Many thanks,
_Matt

Great choice on the Bowen Custom "Rough Country" rear sight, they are strong, accurate and really well made.

Since you've mentioned both the Gold Bead and the Bowen sight, maybe you'll want to consider the "Shallow Vee" version from Bowen, as it works really well with the gold bead.

Here's how my 617 is setup, and my Models 16 and 686 will be done this way too very soon:

Default Possible Weigand Interchangeable Front Base

Hillbilly: here it is pre-mods, at time of purchase. No pinned sight, Magnaport will have to mill it off and replace it. As I'm not 100% sure the gold bead is the right choice, I am considering the Weigand interchangeable front base. Does anyone have experience with it?

Old No7: That shallow V would simplify my life for sure. I can see how it might be quicker on target than a standard notch, but I am concerned that accuracy might suffer in slow fire. What has your experience been?

Can't wait to get it back and post pics with Blu Magnum custom cocobolo grips and Andrews Leather holster/belt/SL cases.

Thanks!

Check out the Weigand rear sight options for the S&W, and the SDM website for the front sight. I use a Weigand rear blade and a SDM red optic for the front.

I guess I'm just a sucker for red ramps & white outlines.
But that's just me.

How does one go about selecting notch and post widths? I assume Magnaport can properly select the heights, though maybe I should do the research and math there too.

Well, your eyes and "mileage" may vary, but to me...

The combination of the Shallow Vee rear sight and Gold Bead front sight works as well as a "peep sight" does on a rifle. And I'm sure you're familiar with all the accuracy they offer to shooters.

This sight picture, to me at least, is:
* Fast to acquire
** Easy to see
*** Foolproof to align (just "dot the white post" of the vee)
**** Very rugged
***** Works with a variety of targets or game
****** And is very, very accurate.

I use it for plinking, hunting and target shooting, and I think it's great.

And did I say it's accurate?!?!

Well, it sure works for me.
