S&W M21 Thunder Ranch
Hi, I'm an avid S&W revolver fan and new to the forum. Needing some advice, picked up a used S&W model 21 Thunder Ranch today ($500.00) out the door, and I love the revolver. Though now I'm tempted to make a few changes, going to change the grips to Altamont checkered panels for the round butt, and do something about the finish. Just don't like the gold thunder ranch on the side. I did not purchase as an investment, and I tend to not get rid of my firearms, so how crazy would I be to refinish it to get rid of the emblem?---ok guys I'm ready lets hear it

Ship the weapon to Smith and let them put a new sideplate on it. If you ever sell it you may/ or may not put the original back on the weapon. This way no refinish to the weapon. Probably cheaper than a quality refinish also.

It is not the answer you likely want but just use it as-is. If S&W fits another sideplate the gun will probably have to be refinished. Spend your money on a good set of stocks you really like and save the rest for bullets, primers, and powder. If the TR logo bothers you that much, I would trade the gun.

The gold emblem is the reason I went with the 22-4 Thunder Ranch version. I am a fan of both .45ACP and .44 Spl. so either caliber would have suited me. I'd want it off too.

I just picked up my Non-TR 21-4 today...I am amazed at the quality of this revolver. BEAUTIFUL finish, very smooth trigger solid, great balance and feel. I am using the standard roundbutt Smith stocks, with a T grip.
Can anyone tell me how long these were made....and why did they stop making them...I have owned S&W revolvers made as far back as the 1870's and this one is as good as any of the old ones, if not better.

The gold thingy is annoying but inconsequential. A good friend of mine just uses a black marking pen to black it out. Eventually the color rubs off and he just does it over. You might also use a "Super Black" touch up pen from Birchwood Casey. If your TR came with standard smooth RB stocks from Ahrends, I'd be happy to buy them from you. Might help offset the cost of buying stocks that you like.
