681's on gun broker!
OK, I just scanned gunbroker for 681 no dash's and found four police trade-ins in decent shape. I bought two for $469.00 each and there are two left with no grips for $449.00
Granted I just bought two 686-1 4" for carry now I will have two pairs. Once these puppies get in, I will give them an aggressive wet sanding and bead blast them. They will be a nice addition to the collection. God help me and my addictions!

I have two 581 no dashs. I love those early fixed sight 4" L frames. They are soooooooo smooth and accurate. They love to be held. I feel I am blessed.

My S&W addiction began with a 586 no dash nickel 6" and the next day a 581 no dash 4" that I sent to get the mod and have reblued at the factory. I expect it back in a couple of weeks.

I started with a 686 that came into the shop for me to do the recall modification, and the owner decided he didn't want it. I bought it and it's one of my favorites to shoot. I also bought a 586 which I like very much too.

I saw those listed and thought they were a good deal. Congrats. I own early copies (AAA serial #s) of a 681 and a 581 or I would have been very interested.

The 581/681 series are more appreciated now than when they were in production. Their production span was in a time when police departments were transitioning to semi autos and the civilian market was fascinated by high speed low drag semiautos.

As long as you're not living in a refrigerator box, keep buying until just before that happens.

Oh hell yeah! I just sent payment today. The guy was cool and combined shipping for me. We will have to compare how they turn out. It is really funny. I originally wanted matching 681 4" pistols as I love the fixed sight for carry. I had a real hard time locating them and they pop up right after I get ship notification of my second 686 4". I had to feed the need if you know what I mean. I feel more whole now

Congrats. My 681 has stayed while I've bought and sold three different 686's. Mine is a CONRail model in 38 special which makes it somewhat cool (to me anyway!)

That Galco Fletch is real nice. Ordered one in black. By the way I spoke to the seller on gunbroker and he notified me the 681's he has are all M stamped, so no need to send them in to S&W for the recall.

When I bought mine there were 4 left. By the time I decided to go back to get more of them they were all gone. Glad they went to a nice home. Mine shipped today. Hard to believe this was the second cycle for all of them. No one bid on them their first listing. This time they went like hot cakes on buy it now prices.
Good shooting.

Just kidding. Congratulations!

Black fletch will be nice - please post some photos! Can't wait to see the pics. The 686 is a commitment to carry, and finding the right grips helps (if I carry this, it is usually factory magnas with Tyler T grip). I can't imagine it as a daily carry, but for hiking and camping, it would be hard to find a better choice.

Got mine in late last week. Cosmetically rough but mechanically sound. I will post pics later today. Wanted to clean it up a bit bofore posting. Also they came with a TDCJ sticker underneath the cylinder. A little research and I was able to figure out they came from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Prices are absurd these days. In 12/04, I paid $489 for a brand new '04 Stocking Dealer's Exclusive... a 5" half-lug 686+ with Ahrends cocobolo stocks - still my only L-frame .357M. Now that much buys a beater old 681... and it's considered a real deal. It's been just over eight years. Wow. I just recently paid $629 plus s/t for a new 351PD - an Airweight J-frame in .22 WMR. By comparison, I guess those 681's are a deal!

Damn, looks like they're gone. I picked up my first 681 from a pawn shop last week, looks like it spent more time in a holster than it did shooting. I absolutely love it and am definitely going to pick up another one some day.

681s are awesome, its a shame more werent made. Ive noticed in the year plus I've been a member of this fine board, 681s and their counterpart 581 have increased in popularity quite a bit. Heck, the fact that not many were made has me re-thinking my plans of a shorter barrel and 7shot cylinder being added to it. Now if I happen to find another 681...

What is a 581/681?
I can't find anything on them. How does it differ from a 686?
I know from the pictures that they are a darn good looking guns.

The 681 is the fixed sight version of the 686. I know of no other other difference in the standard revolvers. There were occasionally some special runs for big dealers with porting or AO tritium sights if I recall correctly.

Ok, here are some pics after about 2 hours of cleaning, polishing and a new set of grips. Still a little rough. It may go to the factory for a beadblast.
