Bidding on a Smith&Wesson 66-3
Hello...this is my first post. I am getting ready to try and bid on a S&W 66-3, 357mag, 3in barrel, S/S, wood grips, it looks like a nice gun and I need help on knowing how much I should bid.
Any suggestions. Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
A 3 inch 66-3 with no box or papers - BUT - in excellent condition, should bring $750 to $850. Anything under $700 and you got a very good deal indeed.
A LNIB 3 inch 66-3 with box and docs could bring $950 to $1000+
These are VERY desireable revolvers which are sought after and there obviously won't be any more made as nice as these 3 inch 66's.
Good luck with your bidding! Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Good luck with you bidding.
I would LOVE to have a 3" Model 66. Most people here would.

It won't be cheap, and yes they are great revolvers and also very desireable. Good luck on your bidding, and welcome to the forum.

Smith and Wesson Model 66 with 3" Barrel : Revolvers at GunBroker.com
Here is a link to a recent auction.
This is what I like to pay for a 3" model 66, but they quite often
cost more than $800. depending upon who is bidding.
Deep pockets win on the auction sites unless one is lucky or sly.
Good luck
Allen Frame

This fine gent nailed it IMO. Have a 3" 66-2 thats crazy accurate and a delight to shoot. Used to blow up water filled milk jugs at 100 yards on a regular basis. I wouldn't take $1500.00 for it as it was my first .357 and still have the box with everything that goes in it.
I used to carry it as my CCW and my woods gun but when the prices went way up on them went back to my 1911 for SD and 3" 657 .41 mag for the outdoors.
As with a model 27 with a 3.5" or 4" barrel everyone should have at least one 3" 66in their collection IMO. Allen-frame should post pics of his measly collection of 3" 66's. I drool on the keyboad everytime he shows them off as they look beautiful and lined up using a lazer. I had a shot at a 66-4 a few years back for $500.00. Still kicking myself in the rump for not buying it!
If you do find and buy one KEEP IT! DON"T SELL IT, NOR TRADE IT. Have left some fine specimens of mine go and has cost me deeply to replace them.
Here's my Ashland all polished up with Ahrend boot grips. It goes to my detective daughter when I pass to keep it in the family. I love my .41 mags but this is my favorite revolver.

Good luck with your bidding, but if you come up short, here's my alternative I just picked up, a 686-3" They are available new at a resonable price.

S&W 66-3
Thanks for all the replys, I have searched sold auctions and also those for sale and it appears anywhere from $450 up to $650. I want this gun and to make sure I get it I guess a ceiling of $700, does that sound reasonble? Thanks for all the help!

$700 is a good starting bid for a 3" 66

The 3" 66 is my all time favorite S&W revolver and if I could only own one this would be it. My local shop had this one priced at $350, a lucky gentleman bought it before I saw it. I bought it from him for $600, he made a good profit and I still got a good deal. These things are scarce and aren't getting any cheaper, the shown GB auction was a great deal. If you find one, buy it even if you think it's a little over priced. It will only go up in value. My latest one is a 66-4 and came from the factory with rubber grips. Looks better with wood grips but I really like the feel of Uncle Mikes boot grips.

My sentiments exactly! Perfect for about any chore, ammo's plentiful and they shoot just so darn good and are perfectly balanced. They all think they have 6" barrels. Least mine does.

I`m sorry. Guess I have a mean streak. This lew horton one of 300 ported and trilijon sighted one will be up for sale just before I die, if I can time it right. That, or you can deal with theresa afterwards.

Here's my personal version, a 3" 65-5.
I have EXACTLY the same grips you have Merril, bought them 20+ years back for a project 2.5" 686, saved them and when my waiting period is over and I can pick tit up, I'm slapping them on this 65.
Similar to a 3" 66, but fixed sights and a glass bead blast finish.

$700 for a 66 3" is a steal.

What is a good price on a 66-3 with a 2 1/2" barrel and combat S&W grips? Is the 3" barrel more desirable than the 2.5 inch?
