Im a new member from the Show Me State.
I have found a 17-7 at my local GS.
It is very nice with a bigger pricetag.
Just wondering if the extra money for this revolver would be worth it? Would require all my resorces,including a trade. The 17-7 is 4" full lug barrel.My wife enjoys shooting my stubby 34-1 and my 17-3. I have a couple of stubby 38's a 36 and 60 she doesnt care for. Trying to decide what to do. Had planned on trying to find a prelock 63.

What is the store asking for the 17-7?

S&W only made the 17-7 for part of the 1994-96 period and not many with a 4 inch barrel, so the price could reflect the scarcity if the gun store knows its stuff. The 17-7 is the last blued six-shot revolver in the K-22 line as the model 17-8 introduced the ten round cylinder in 1996 and was then discontinued in 1999 in favor of the stainless steel 617's.

Also, if you wife doesn't like the model 60 etc. I doubt she will like a model 63 either. The light weight and smaller frame make the J frame .22's a bit on the challenging side for many to shoot well.

I happen to have one myself.It's good enough and scarce enough,that you should pick it up if the price is within reason.Doubt that you'll come across another one,and the combat grips themselves are valuable.
Of course,as the previous poster said,knowing the price would help us give an informed answer.However,contrary to waht the previous poster wrote,if she likes your 34,she'll like a 63.

The GS is asking a 1000. My wife just doesnt like blast and noise from 38's. She has my 34-1 as her house gun. She hasnt done much shooting. Would like to spend more time shooting together. Its starting to become a extended family thing. With my son and daughter-in-law. My wifes sister wants to learn also. We also have an 8yr old son that would like maybe the 63. But do want this 17-7. LOL

It appears your LGS has this particular gun listed on Gunbroker. It's a nice looking gun but the price seems high to me. You could make an offer a couple of hundred lower and see what happens. If they sell it online they have to pay the auction company fees....

The only problem I have with making an offer is Im going to have to maybe do some trading plus cash to buy it. I just sold a 31-1 to have money for a deal that went sour. This question is directed to civil1977,do the grips look original to the gun?

Even though they are both .22s there is a pretty big difference between a 2 or 4" J frame and a 4" full lug K frame, which is about twice as heavy. For plinking it sounds a 4" model 63 would be better for your purposes and would cost about half of the model 17.

For a defense gun, have you let her try the .38 with a 148 gr target wadcutter load?

Guess part of me wants something that is a little bit hard to come by,with the 17-7. But yes you are correct,will be a plinking gun. But I havent ever seen a 63,let alone come accross one for sale in my area. The prlock with 3" barrel would be my choice. Oh well,guess good things come to those who wait!

Sounds like just an abysmal buy for you!

1. You all ready have a 17.
2. The price is an absolute joke!
3. With that high a starting price I have my doubts that you'll be able to get them down to a reasonable price, let a lone a good price.
4. You don't have the money to buy it.
5. If you're selling/trading guns with this store you won't get anything remotely close to what they're worth.

Sorry, but I can't even imagine entertaining the idea of buying this gun in your situation.

I would have to agree with what you have said. Have bought,sold and traded there on several ocassions. But probably will just try and find a 63! Thanks everyone for there input. Now to find that elusive 63,or maybe another 34.

Walk away. You could buy an older and better model 18 for the same or less. Good luck.

I would look for a M18 or possibly a current model 63 3". Yes, it has the lock, but is a nice size and weight for a lady.

For $1000,I think my 17-7 just became available!!
Look for that 63 four incher,and as others have said, a Model 18 is a real nice gun,both being lighter than the 17-7.

The $1000 price tag is just too much.

You can purchase the same gun with a 10 round cylinder in stainless as a model 617-4,5 or 6 for $600 to $700. Don't worry about the stupid lock on the 617-6 either! My 4 inch 617-6 is one of my best shooting K-22's, besting my 6 inch 1951 models!

I missed the fact that your wife like your model 34. A model 63 should be OK too, though they are very difficult to find for any price within reason these days!

I think that price is high. I have a 4" full lug 17-6 and I have to say it is one of my favorite shooting k-22s certainly my favorite 4". Accurate as can be and a great trigger. Now I am a bigger guy so the size for me is perfect. See if you can borrow or rent a similiar gun for your wife to try and see if she likes the size and weight.

I know the Combat Stocks came standard on the 17-6 but I don't know about the 17-7. I believe the 17-8 had Hogue rubber grips.

Camster.....if that 17-7 is still available I'd definitely consider taking it off your hands for the $1000 😉
