Default Whats up with DX classic sights?

I have been looking at front sights and i see that S&W make 2 types of front sights. The pinned ones and the DX type sights. I understand how they both work but i dont get why they still have both types. Do the pinned tend to come on the "defensive or hunting "guns and the DX on the competition type guns? Is one system going to replace or phase out the other system? What do you guys think, is one better than the other?

I don't think the sight the gun comes with is dependent on anything beyond when the gun was made. I have a 5" 629-3 Classic DX and a 6-1/2" 629-4 Classic and both have the front sight that can be changed by depressing a release in the gun's muzzle. Other S&Ws I have, some as old as a no-dash 686, have pinned front sights.
