Price check Model 10
I've been offered to buy an unused, NIB, Blue colored,S&W Model 10 with a 4' barrel. Barrel is Tapered.99% it has the screw driver, Cleaning Rod and jag, All the paper work and original box. Asking price is $600 I haven't found out as of yet, what model 10 variation it is... still waiting, since we're communicating via e-mail in the same State. Your thoughts?

Without additional information (pics) it's hard to say. A standard, run-of-the-mill Model 10, in the condition you describe, is not in my opinion worth $600. That seems about $100 too high to me. If however it is some special variation, with collectors interest, it may well be worth the $600. Try to get some detailed pics to post here. That way you'll get a much better idea as to actual value.

They may be getting harder to find in that condition but that does seem pretty high. And I'm not sure if fixed sight guns came with SAT so that may not be original.
Or you may see it and fall in love with a real classic and it's all over.

More info 10-7 / 1977 birthdate. Does have the Half Moon elevated Front Sight Sorry, SAT?? Pics to follow. Not at home right now. The pics I received are very nice. Looks to be in beautiful shape. The price tag did strike me as a little high at first, but as things being as they are, not shocked.

SAT is the Sight Adjustment Tool, or the screwdriver. It was not necessary on the Model 10, since the rear sight is fixed, not adjustable. I would agree that the price is a bit high, even in today's slightly frenzied market.

It will have a rear site but it will be fixed so there won't be a sight adjustment tool (SAT).

Yup, like my M64 You are correct. I should have stated no adjustable rear sight, as in a M15

I just this week paid $500 total for one exactly like you describe. Would I have paid $600? Maybe...I wanted it, and I'm not sure $100 would keep me from something I really wanted .

My first ever handgun was exactly what you are asking about. I traded it off 20 odd years ago and have always regretted it. I keep telling myself I'll replace it someday...but prices keep rising Pics would be awesome though!

Pics are coming in tonight, although I get of Shift@ Midnight I've never paid $600 for a Revolver, although I did pay $565 for my Nickel 19-3, 4 years ago.

if it was a model 10-5 that I have a fundamental weakness for...matching diamond grips, snub nose, round butt, original box, in like new condition.... etc i might consider it.
everyone has their unicorn, white whale and dream.

Wow that gun is clean. I could see myself messing up and paying $600 for that since you will never find a new one like that ever again and it's just getting harder to find them looking like that. But I'm repeating myself. $600 has so far been my top price paid. I've done that for a 28, 28-2, 19-3, three 19-4's, and a three inch 65-5. So who would I be to laugh??? But you won't see those again either.

As described, though not rare it's a collector's item for its condition.
$600 isn't ridiculous but a little high for a late '70s thin barrel Model 10; probably a little south of what you'd pay to most dealers who specialize in collector's items, though.
It would almost be a shame to buy it for shooting, in my opinion. But if an investment and you really want it, I'd haggle a little and buy it.

I'd be thinking hard on that one. Even though $600 seems a bit high, it does look like it's new in box, no lock and with case hardened components. Msrp on a brand new model 10 is $719 but it has the internal lock and mim components.
If you think of it that way then it's a bargain, you can probably find a cheaper used one but if you want to start with a new, old school quality revolver, I'd say that's the way to go.

Thanks Everyone for all the responses, helps in the decision making process, I value the comments. I'm considering walikng away from this for the asking price. I may be better served looking for a "shooter" as opposed to a Collector piece. I ultimately would love to find a gently used Model 10, HB, -5 FOR AROUND THE $400-$425 RANGE. In CT, right now you can't even touch a pre owned handgun for under $500.00. Even on the local forums, the prices are just NUTS! I may offer the Seller $500 for the piece, or just learn to be patient and let this hysteria die down. It is a fine looking Model 10 though

So the dilema, $600 for the Model 10-7 or $500 for the Model 13-2 ? I actually felt that for the condition, the 13 may have been priced a little high. That's before I found out the prices of Revolvers has skyrocketed . Your thoughts?

The price of everything has skyrocketed and right now guns and ammo demand premiums due to the alleged shortages, Obama/Feinstein scare, etc. But paying 600 dollars for an old Model 10 makes me queasy. I have a number of them, one or two bought in 2011 or 2012, just because I like them and have a S&W .38 caliber collection of sorts. But all of them were under 500 bucks and I think only one, actually, was over 400. Still, if this gun is as pristine as it appears, with the box, etc., it's not the worst investment you'll ever make. You won't make money on it any time soon but if you plan to hold onto it for the long term I guess I can see why you would do it. Just gives me the shivers....

Ya know, the consensus seems to be leaning that way...May have to rethink the whole thing,,,even the Model 13 @ $500 gave me sticker shock

Hey All American,
That's a beautiful Model 10. The M10 is my all time favorite K-Frame; it's the first S&W I ever fired. You can't post too many pics of a excellent M10 like that. They may seem like dime a dozen, but not so much when you are talking NIB. I really prefer the HB, but the old pencil barrels are just too cool for school.
However, like most, I think it's on the high side, and since you want something more utility and not collector I would go for the M13. I'd probably pay $600 for it, but since sou said earlier that you were thinking a 4" HB M10 more for using than looking at, that 13 would fit the bill. I'm a big fan of the 13s too, plus you can shoot .38s all the time and have that excellent option for .357.
Let us know what you decide and post more pics when you get it!

I'd take the M 10. You may even fire +P loads without doing harm to the gun.
The M10-7 was my first S&W revolver together with a M 27 which I bought brand new in 1993. The M 10 is the one that I really miss of all the S&W revolvers I've owned and sold.
I did some test shooting at 50 meters with my M10 and it worked more than just adequately.
Post the Serialnumber and it can be dated to the year of manufacture.

Ok, spoke with the Seller of the 10-7 today, he is willing to give me a $50.00 discount for my Military Service, if I can produce a DD214, not a problem. So at the price of $550 for a virtually new 10-7, is this a game changer? I realize that prices are high, and it is a Seller's market, would you finalize this deal? I realize in the end, the decision lies on my shoulders. Thanks again for the responses, I trust the info.

I think this comes down to whether you want a collector's piece that you don't shoot much (if at all) and treat as an investment, or a shooter that can serve multiple purposes and put a lot of lead down range.

Hap,
Exactly...worse case is I shoot it, carry it, have fun with it. Or, look for something that costs less and not worry about reducing the value by use.. Yeah, in the end it's on me. Thanks, I'll let ya know what I decide. Everyone's been a big help

I've had my M13-2 better than 25 yrs now, and as I posted in another thread, it'll be the one that stays home when all the rest are sold for food. Go for the M13.

If your wanting a shooter then no i wouldn't but i have seen no time machinces around and thats a pinned barrel gun. Prices can go up overnight for a lot of reasons and stay as S&W made nice guns and it may be there time to hit Colt price levels and it just needed the right push to do so..
I'm new to collecting S&W and there is a reason why i like them as there darn well made .. i would bite at $550 but it wouldn't be a shooter as you buy lesser grade for that. my 2 pennys

I agree..I had to decide as others have recommended, what was I going to do with this revolver. It came down to I want to shoot and carry. So, I walked away from the 10-7. Looking for a shooter at a reasonable price. The shooters aren't scarce, the reasonable prices are, but that's subjective

I agree. If you wanted it as a collectible I would have said go for it. (It will be worth $600 and then more...eventually.) But for a shooter it's too high-priced. Did he offer you the same $50 off the model 13? $450 might still be a little high for that one, but not outrageously so. And it also appears in pretty good condition.
If you're hoping for a decent, shooter-grade model 10, keep $400 or so in cash readily available and just be patient. If you can't wait, buy the 13.

Thanks for the great advice, the Model13 is from a different Seller. Agreed, going to practice patience and hold out for the Model 10,heavy barrel 4". Gonna be tough.

You are still living in the 70's !
Some of you guy's are still living in the 70's, you cannot buy anything for the price you paid in 1970, and the quality is no where as good ! Look at the price a new Smith will cost you now,and I would not have one of the new ones. I purchased a new in box 31-1 .32 yesterday for $600 and didnt look back, and I am not especially fond of a .32 cal., but if it is a short barrel and round butt or square butt in excellent shape with box, I cant leave it sitting for someone else to pounce on it ! It is only money , you can make more of it , but you cant make a real nice 70's Smith.

Nice Gun Yeah, maybe your right. Not so much about price, but about what am I willing to pay to have a gun sit in a box, and what am I wiling to pay, to have a gun trusted by my side and become proficient with that said gun.

Got that. I asked CALREB about the piece he posted; my point to him was I doubted that for $300 they were offering a Model 10 in the condition or with the accoutrement of the $600 one you originally posted...

And I was buying gas for 29.9 a gallon. Gas is now 13 times that amount. You model ten would now be $1015.00 at that inflation rate. What were you making in 1973 per hour?
In comparison, guns are a bargain now!
Now as for taxes.....
