Default S&W Model 47?

I have never heard of this particular model until just the other day someone briefly mentioned it in another forum. I assume it is a revolver vs a semi-auto pistol; perhaps an N-frame but, don't really know. I checked out the Standard Catalog of S&W, 3rd Ed and didn't see it listed in the index. Don't see any mention of a Model 47 in Roy Jinks' History of Smith & Wesson (Rev. 10th Ed) either. Was there ever a Model 47 and in what caliber was it made?

I don't think there is one. After 1957 all guns had a model number stamped on the frame, and perhaps someone saw an earlier gun with a number stamped in the same area and thought the 47 was it.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. While no means an expert, I thought I knew most of the model numbers and have owned the more popular ones over the last 45 years.

Oyaji,

The Model 47 was an Experimental 9mm Semi-Auto Pistol S&W produced in the Late 70's!! The main reason most aren't familiar with this Model is the fact that very few are seen with the Original "Model 47" Stamping!! Reason being, most all of these were over-stamped with a (1) Prefix & an (A) Suffix to the "Model 47" Stamping prior to being shipped becoming a "Model 147A" which are also few & far between!!

If you collect S&W 9mm Auto's I'd say it would definitely be in your best interest to grab it if one crosses your path as I believe there were less than 200 of them produced if memory serves!! Hope this helps!!
