586 no dash ?s
Just obtained a 586 no dash 4". Has no white outline on the rear sight and the S&W logo is on the side plate. First three of the serial are AAB, don't have it with me to give the rest but I think it's in the 1300's. Anyway. Was just wondering how rare it is to have the logo on the side plate instead of the left side. I will post pics as soon as I get a min, It's a beautiful gun. Thanks in advance.

I can't address the white outline issue but I can tell you my 686 no dash, serial # AAB91XX also has the logo on the sideplate, I don't believe it's a rare occurance. I don't believe it would've made a difference whether the revolver was blue as your 586 or stainless as the 686 as to where the logo was stamped. My late father bought it new in July of '81.
Looking forward to your photos, they are great guns-blue or stainless.

586 no dash ?s
Is there a letter "M" above the model number?
There was (is) a recall from S&W for 586 No Dashes and 586 - Dash Ones.
If there is an "M" on your revolver it's been modified correctly by S&W.

O.P., my 586 no dash serial # ACK165X has the R.R. but no W.O, and the S&W logo is on the left side.
I hope that yours shoots as well as mine does.

I don't have it in hand yet so I don't know if it has had the recall done yet. Should be here any day. If it hasn't had the recall done, should I have it done or not, I've heard it's not really necessary if it's not a carry gun, which mine won't be. However, it will get shot on occasion.

I hope it does as well, I used to have a 6" not sure what dash it was, I bought it new in the mid-late 80's. LOVED that gun, kick myself every time I think about selling it. I am confident it will shoot well though.

Congrats. Great gun. The right side logo isn't rare, but it was only on the very early L frames. I have a 681 and a 581 with the side-plate logo and both have AAA serial numbers. The other 7 or so no-dash L frames I own have the logo on the left side. As for the recall, I haven't sent any of mine back, and I haven't had any problems. I think the number of guns actually affected was a small minority, but I don't use mine for self defense. Perhaps if i did I would reconsider, but I don't think so unless the gun was actually binding up.

cptdco,
Thanks for the info. I didn't think it was a must have done type thing unless like you said it's a self defense gun, which it's not going to be. If it does bind up I understand Smith will still do the mod free of charge, is that correct? I've heard they will but haven't called them or anything.

Last I heard, about 6 months ago they will still do the modification for you.
That said, I've got the same model (and age from the sounds of things), (mine is a pretty nickle plated version), and haven't had a single issue with it. So I'd say that the modification is an optional one.

The logo "belongs" on the side plate. That's where the old S&W revolvers had the logo. They changed it on the Model 586 some time while they were still making the no-dash. I'm not sure why they changed it, but I like it better on the right side - which happens to be the right side.

I had two 586s - a no dash and a dash-1. Kick myself for selling them but at the time there was a different gun I wanted more ... They were both great guns. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours.

I've also got to say (since it sounds like you might not have got to hold it yet) I love mine. It just feels right in my hand, and there isn't much that tops the smooth action and the accuracy either. (I'll admit my 586 was my first revolver, so maybe its just that I hold a special place in my heart for my first... LOL).
Dang it, I wonder if I can sneak off to the range this weekend now... Maybe I'll skip the mother in law's Easter dinner.... haha

thru the years S&W will move the logo from side to side....its not rare either way...if it does not have the M....it may or may not be a problem...primer flow while shooting red hot 125gr.would on occasion cause the problem...many never had the problem whatsoever...good luck the 586 is one of my favs.you got a good one i'm sure!

Thanks Guys, Picking It Up In An Hour. Have Had A 6" In The Past So I Know I'll Love It. I'm Thinking My Loads For It Will Likely Be 140 Grain Xtp Over Some 231, Nothing Hot, Just Medium .357 Loads. I'll Use What Ever Charge That Is Most Accurate With That Combo.
